Hi there folks, I'm going to be getting a new (replacement ) car soon and just can't decide on what to go for. For many years I have always ended up in a golf vr6 (addicted to the sound), the last one being a self built mk3 cabby vr6 but now I'm 40 and ha e gotten a bit tired of the whole hot hatch scene and want to go back to my old habits of the bigger saloon motors with same if not more performance. Now I have always gone the bmw route if not in a vw but fancy a change now so any thoughts on the following cars would be helpful and any suggestions appreciated (gotta be a petrol as hate diesels)
1.alfa 159 2.2 or v6 sportwagon
2. BMW e39 530i sport
3. Ford monde st220
4. Jag s-type 3l v6 or v8
5. Jag xj8
6. Mazda 6 mps
7. Mg zt-t v6
8. Rover 820 vitesse 5th
9. Skoda octavia vrs
10. Volvo 850/v70, v70, s60 (all t5)
I will admit I'm a V-whore and never been a fan of turbocharged engines as the v6, v8's suit my driving style more and less likely to go pop but I like power and performance so after 23 years of driving in maybe it's time to try em out (although I do HATE HATE HATE driving the mrs's golf gttdi per 30th because of the "no power no power" "oh there it all is, no its gone again" effect which I assume is similar to a petrol turbo except with a few more rpm of power)

Your list of possibilities is mind boggling... Rover 820 alongside Mazda6 MPS alongside an XJ8 alongside an Octavia.

Did you use a random car generator? :p

No just a weird taste in cars lol, plus we all have a car we like that we shouldn't just like we all have song that we like that we just shouldnt and in my case it's the rover 800 and sd1.
As for my list it is a mix of soft barge and more performance oriented cars but ill have a budget upto 3.5k so options s limited

If its a barge your wanting, surely a Lexus LS430 comes in budget? Wont get more reliable luxo barge for your money I'd imagine.

Got to agree, that is a confusing read that list though. But an Octavia VRS would be a shout out of that list personally.

It's a definite no to the lexus, I know they can have some great engines but there ain't a single Lexus I like Inc the lfa, but I admit I'm not a fan of jap cars at all, hell Imo I think any rover looks better quality inside. The ONLY reason the mazda is on the list is due the price + performance plus awd.

The MG ZT is a far better car than the old 800. That said, the ZTs are still quite old and most won't have been cared for, you'll be lucky to find a cherished one. Oh, a ZT-T? Well even less chance I would say.

Don't bother with the XJ8 if you are thinking x308... Bit like the MG, you'll be lucky to find a good one that doesn't have a multitude of issues (Inc. rust).

E39 530i? Just give up now, surely?

Out of your list, the Jag S type R. Unloved but you might find one looked after by an enthusiast. Performance is similar to that of the E39 M5. Almost surprised that isn't on your list (again I wouldn't bother unless you can afford and find a minter).

BTW, I owned all these cars years ago when they were much newer (except the 530i) not sure I'd touch them now.

Out of that list the Jag XJ8. Maybe try and find an XJR. Or mk1 XK8 (a future classic) instead of a saloon.

Then a nice exhaust to make it sing :D

I would suggest a Subaru or Lancer. Plenty of room, performance, and should be reliable if the previous owner was responsible.

Thought about the zt-t v6 as drove one years ago and really surprised the **** out of me as to how good it was (considering) .
plus would suit my needs more than those on list in a way, the subaru GOD NO just NO I know ow they can be good cars but apart from the looks, sound, qualitly ( in terms of feel and looks as I've mostly owned german) performance they're great lol oh by they way can ya tell I really don't like em even tho they do tick all of my needs lol. The xk8 ain't suitable as would need to transport the mrs'so grandkids at times plus I have a big male akita to haul around (as funny as it would look at the lights with an akita in the passenger seat). Always fancied the an xj but always been a bit too young for one as for S-type R yes please but way out of my budget and probably cost too much in petrol as me+v8= BIG fuel bills (i just can't help it lol).

Out of all the Japanese cars the lancers along with the supra, r33 and mps6 are the ones I'd buy but never seen one sold for less than £6000 that ain't shagged or abused. I've gotten older and wiser nowadays in the past I'd of gotten a shagger and spent a fortune on it over time getting good but now can't be arsed plus health issues limit me.

Never thought an xjr would be in my price range but quick look on ebay and yep they're heap enough that's definitely a thought might have a look at a couple see what condition they are. Volvo t5 's keep popping in my thoughts but I know I'd get the tuning bug again with one of those.

What do you really want?
A performance car or a properly good fun car.

1.alfa 159 2.2 or v6 sportwagon
2. BMW e39 530i sport
3. Ford monde st220
4. Jag s-type 3l v6 or v8
5. Jag xj8
6. Mazda 6 mps
7. Mg zt-t v6
8. Rover 820 vitesse 5th
9. Skoda octavia vrs
10. Volvo 850/v70, v70, s60 (all t5)

1, lmao nope boring piece of scrabbly fwd unreliable ****. Yes it is.
2, boring i had one of its nearest cousins and it was fast but boring as hell.
3, lol not bad but scrabble, heavy and just a mondeo - not the worst on this list though.
4, yes grandads car.
5, grandads grandad car.
6, and almost decent family car forced to have 4wd because of scrabbleness - nope.
7, er just pass me a wheelie bin
8, nope not that wheelie bin - its too old, and **** and er.. crap.
9, half decent choice if boring scrabble.
10 .. a cathedral on wheels, fast but not the BTTC brilliance they are supposed to be.

That is a strangely diverse list of cars! I would think going with any of the luxury motors on that list at your price point may be cash black holes, unless you get lucky of course and find a unicorn!

My money would be on the Mondeo, Mazda, Skoda, or Volvo so realistically it's about finding a decent example of the one you actually want. Go drive them, that's the only way you're going to see if it's what you want to live with!
