What should I look for in a cycle helmet? (It's for mountain biking.)

Any particular recommendations?

Go to a shop and try them all on.

depends on your budget and requirements.

but what touch said, best to try them on. getting a good fit via mailorder can be a PITA.

On the MTB helmets, are the front visors usually detachable? If they aren't wouldn't they reduce the effectiveness of the helmet if you crash?

normally designed to come off in a crash so shouldnt effect protection.

They'll snap off pretty easy with any force.

Only screwed in, not moulded.

If buying online, measure the circumference of your head, just above the eyebrows...then use the manufacturer size guide.

There's no difference between the high priced ones and the lower priced ones, just paint.
CRC also do free returns, and is hassle free. If you're unsure about sizes, buy two and send one back
