I know people hate these threads so i'll ask anyway :p

My trusty Dell 2005 is on it's way out, and i've been looking for a replacement, but don't know what i'm really looking for.

Ideally I want something in the 20" up region, with a minimum of 1680x1050 res (as that's what i've been using), and a budget of around £200 or so.

I'm not a major gamer, although i do play the odd game, but it's mainly used for general browsing/office type stuff, and films.
The old Dell does a great job for me, but I don't know what the equivalent would be today.

I sit about 2 foot from the monitor if that helps at all.

I have been looking at the Viewsonic VX2260wm, the Samsung p2250, the Dell P2210H, and various 23/24" displays (the Samsung on offer looks good to me, as does the Ilyama Prolite 2409).

But I don't know the pros/cons of the various technologies behind them, and don't want to buy something that isn't going to do the job.

I've been having another look and possibly narrowed it down to either
The Dell UltraSharp 2209WA or the Viewsonic VP2365WB.
Both are about £250 which is the upper end of my budget.

Both have IPS screens, USB, and various adjustments on the stands, however the Viewsonic has a better resolution/larger screen, but worse contrast and slower refresh (is it really that much slower, or just a difference in how it's being measured?).

Does anyone have any thoughts about them or other monitors that would do? (I'm probably going to have to order soon as my monitor is definitely getting worse).

Thanks :)

Aye, the 2005FPW is an S-IPS monitor - so going for any of the TN panel monitors listed in teh first post would fell like a step down in quality.

As you say, either the Dell 2209WA or Viewsonic will fit the bill with their E-IPS panels and reasonable prices. The viewsonic does have the larger resolution, and slightly larger size but as well as inferior response time and lack of proper reviews (most are just the cnet review copy/pasted). One thing that does seem to crop up about the viewsonic is low brightness and lackluster colours - something you certainly don't want in an IPS monitor.

The Dell 2209WA on the other hand has been reviewed thoroughly and used by many forum members (myself included) and is a fantastic monitor. Low response time and input lag - so very good for gaming. Nice brightness and wonderful colours - watching movies/TV on it is lovely. Also, compared to a 23in 16:9 monitor, the 2209WA's screen area is 96% the size of its compatriot and is actually taller- so for webpages/office the Dell could be superior.

Thanks :)
I'm definitely leaning towards the Dell after reading that.
I almost miss the old days of the CRT, when all you had to worry about was the geometry of the screens, colours and risk of desk breakage:p
It seemed so much simpler when buying a monitor back then.

I ordered the Dell earlier after some dithering :)

Hopefully it'll be even better than my old one:) (and I'm sort of half hoping i can fix the old one, so I can have two 1650x displays:p)

And just to make this a triple post, it arrived a couple of hours ago (I left it to warm up for two hours), and initial impressions are very good indeed :)

The only minor disappointment is that it's actually slightly lower than my 2005, but the colours etc look good out of the box, everything looks nice and sharp and I much prefer the placement of the USB sockets on this one over the old, as they are actually accessable from my desk now :p
