Looking to replace my gtx 480 as I just fancy something new and I have a new monitor on the way too 1080p I play a real mix of games and always like everything on ultra. I can't complain about the 480. On my current 22" monitor (1050 I think) it handles everything I throw at it but obviously the new monitor at 1080 will place a bit more load on.

Budget about £250 but can be flexible if the 300 mark really brings something special in. I have only ever used nvidia and would prefer to stay that side of the fence but going in open minded and willing to go AMD again if it really gives me more poke.

The 290 is something to consider although it will be pushing your budget. Of you want to stay with Nvidia I would go with the EVGA 770 acx. The other choice would be the 280x toxic which is said to be faster than the 770 but some games show the opposite.

Firstly, I'd see how it handles 1080p. It might be sufficient for your needs.

Re : potential upgrade - I went from overclocked GTX480 / 570 cards to a clocked 7970, and I'm seeing on average double the performance. Very pleased with the upgrade. I'd look at either 280x / 770.

The 290's start about the £330 budget it it's really that much better and looking at some quick reviews it seems it is then I don't mind putting in the extra. I'm sure the 480 will poke up with it a little longer but there still fetching good cash second hand and in a year they won't be I guess so just seems a logical time to do it. Would want a good 3 years out the next card I buy so maybe the 290 is the way to go..... Never been down the AMD route. I could go sli 480 as a cheap fix but I think it might just be a bit warm in the summer
