What to replace my N97 with?

its called MeeGo now.

I thought N900 had no chance of seeing MeeGo? Wasn't there like an official Nokia statement to the tune of "Maemo on Nokia N900 is not upgradeable to MeeGo"?

Just read an announcement on the intranet that its now called MeeGo, devices aren't my area so you probably right

Other than build quality the E72 doesnt offer anything better than the 9700...ive used the E72 for a week...did a swap with a friend of mine who was raving about how good it was....its a nicely built handset that it surpasses the 9700 but in other areas the 9700 is a better handset plus im sorry but the keyboard on the E72 truly sucks compared to the 9700.

Also this friend of mine who i swapped with now has ditched the E72 in favour of the BB 9700.

I have to agree with tigers though Spawn.

E72 is cheaper, push mail is free via Nokia Messaging (no BIS crap required) and it comes with free voice guided navigation.

I wont argue that the 9700 is a fantastic device and great at what it does but I would dispute that the E72 keyboard sucks.

The wife adores hers and she had a BB 8520 prior to it which was a total POS and should cost about £50 rather than the £190 or so RIM are asking for it.

I'd look at Android - the Milestone would be ideal if you want a physical keyboard, I can vouch for it myself; tis a superb phone

I am limited to phones Vodafone themselves offer. I played with a Milestone at the weekend and found the fact the keyboard is fixed and the screen wont tilt was a major omission :(

How do you want to connect your laptop to your phone?

If Bluetooth is the answer then immediately rule out anything Android or Apple because they won't do it.

Wow... seriously? Yes, it's via Bluetooth - I use it all the time and have done with every single phone I've had since my 7650 in 2003. I thought this was basic functionality?

Why can't I use Bluetooth for this with Android or Apple handsets?

It seems there isnt a handset on the market that meets my needs other than the N97. Which is broken.

:(

Have you given any thought to a Blackberry? I got rid of my Nokia 5800 XPress music last week and got myself a Blackberry, granted the querty keyboard takes a bit of getting used to but it is a very capable device.

Milestone have both onscreen software and hardware keyboard, plus about half a dozen different options for software keyboard (I use HTC keyboard with long press for alternative characters on it for example) and of course they all work in both landscape and portrait mode (with exception of hardware keyboard that is). Bluetooth is the weak spot of all android phones and it's being approached in very american "I don't understand what you mean" way by developers and hence it doesn't support very basic and obvious European things, such as rSAP or sim access for in car systems or tethering, although the latter is probably just a question of time and kernel support.

Not sure what you mean by keyboard is fixed and screen won't tilt? Do you mean it physically doesn't detach and screen doesn't lift up to an angle? But what phone does that?

I mean the screen wont tilt - so you cant have the phone on a desk or something, and you have to hold it a certain way to use the keyboard.

I simply cannot beleive these so called amazing phones do not support something as basic as bluetooth data

I don't think any phone does that at the moment. Milestone have quite a few desk stands where you can get it to work as a desk alarm clock or (I use Seidio kit on desk and similar kit for nav/dashboard utility panel in car - tomorrow morning my Milestone is joining me for a 3000 mile journey to the outskirts of the continent and back and will be utilized purely as a handy km/h display on dashboard (and phone of course)).
To be honest, you wouldn't really want the screen to tilt as such mechanism would create massive ergonomical disadvantages in regular modes - keyboard on a device that small is a gimmick anyway, it's never going to work like PDA in a stand with foldable keyboard. I probably used that hardware keyboard on milestone maybe five times in total, most of it navigating bootloader.

Indeed, fantastic isn't it. Android this and iphone that is all we here these days & yet they have features missing that 5 year old phones can do.

I sync my phone via Bluetooth automatically with my laptop as soon as its on. I can then send texts & make calls & 'tether' without even picking my phone up.

Its really simple, useful and user friendly with PC Suite and a feature that will keep me away from iphones and Android for the immediate future at least.

Err, I *do* want the screen to tilt because thats exactly what my current phone does. I have a keyboard which slides out and the screen tilts to an angle. It is excellent and I am very happy with the way it works and the keyboard is a brilliant size.

Only the damn thing wont hold a signal and Vodafone have no others to replace it with, apparently.

A perfectly working N97 without signal issues is exactly the right phone for me, however it seems due to Nokia's shocking quality control, such an N97 doesn't exist.

I spoke to my old boss at Vodafone regarding this - he says they've had just as much trouble with the N900's as they had with the N97's and suggested that buying Nokia would be a bad idea.

Must admit, during my time there, I hated all N-Series Nokia's with a passion because of the amount of them we used to see back with problems.

So you want a phone that doesn't exist. Which is more annoying to you, putting up with the poor quality and bad reception of the N97, or putting up with a screen that doesn't fold, or not having a hardware keyboard?

I do understand you want the screen to tilt, but what I'm saying is I don't think (I'll be happy to be proven wrong) any of the mainstream manufacturers currently has, or have plans to have in the near future, smart phone with touch screen, slide keyboard and tilt screen because with space required to accommodate tilt mechanism it creates disadvantage to the phone - main of which is - it ends up looking a lot like HTC Tilt2 and nothing like desirable iPhone (which, as you already noticed is focus of the whole industry). Another reason might be, if I remember correctly, there is some sort of patent challenge going between Rim and some other brand over tilt keyboards (which Rim was trying to introduce in portrait mode on one of their phones)...

From pure end user point of view I understand your frustration with the things from the past being often better than things awaiting you in the future, but unfortunately - that's where the stuff is going - the best phone I could find for my money at the moment, as a phone, rather than multimedia gadget lookalike, has worse reception than 8 year old Nokia 6310 (which used to have three bars of signal two floors under ground in a a-bomb shelter grade concrete parking lot), takes worse pictures than 4 year old SE K800 and has less bluetooth features than 5 year old K750 and costs my network provider more than semi decent gaming laptop. To me a choice between fully featured phone and a device that "has app for everything" except most basic phone features is absolutely clear. Not so for the marketing departments though.

hmm, reception on my N900 has never been an issue, certainly no difference from my old SE phones or my previous Nokia devices.
