What to serve with fish pie?

Ok, I've made half a dozen fish pies (salmon, smoked haddock, white fish, king prawns, boiled egg, parsley sauce, mash topping), which have gone in the freezer. We ate the first one, and it was great (can't beat fish pie) but, in the time since I last made them, the kids' appetites have grown (age 6, 2.5) and the pies are now not really big enough (1.5 litre dishes, brim filled).

Ordinarily just serve with a pile of veg, but could do with some suggestions of something to bulk the meal out a bit - any ideas?

(I'll get some bigger receptacles for next time)

Steamed veg- carrot, peas, broccoli, beans, cauliflower, beans.
Garlic bread.
Treat it like a potato topped chowder and pour it into a bread bowl.

Make your veg more interesting: Steamed samphire, crispy baked kale, sauteed spinach (wilt in pan with butter).

Bulky veg: Thick-sliced aubergine or courgette either griddled, grilled or roasted after being lightly coated in oil

Bulk up on carbs: baked, either whole or cubed, sweet potato, cubed roasted butternut squash. Or lemon and dill infused cous-cous.

Bulk up on protein: Pulses such as black-eyed beans ,or mixed beans, or green lentils (not dried, ready go to in a can). So start by sweating down some chopped onion and garlic, add some chopped tomato/peppers or both, then throw in the pulses with plenty of seasoning and herbs/spices of your choice. top it with a poached egg if you really want to bulk it out on the protein side!

As above have said, lots of veggies.

I'm really into diced sweet potato and chickpeas (can also do cubed carrot, swede and other root veg), roasted with a little olive oil and smoked paprika. Can eat it hot or cold.

Could easily add some large diced red onions, roast garlic cloves are lovely too.

Diced pancetta with French beans and/or carrots is a nice side dish as well - everything tastes better with bacon.

Thanks Guys, some good options there.

I hadn't thought of garlic bread, which suits as it's so simple (the idea of pre-making all these is that they can just be chucked in the oven with a basic side of veg).

This ^ sounds like it could make a pretty decent lunch. Might try it.

Don't buy normal garlic bread then, get some part-baked stuff and some garlic butter and do it yourself. It's so much better.

I'm not a fan of double-carbing* (:p) so really I'd just suggest lots of veg. Asparagus and peas perhaps. Maybe some carrots although I thought they go in the pie. I guess garlic bread as a 'filler' would work.

*My girlfriend once got a severe telling-off from her Italian friend for daring to serve chips with lasagne :p

I think the fact they were from a local chippy didn't help :p (The lasagne was homemade). I dunno, Italians have all sorts of nonsense rules about food and drink. I think they're happy to eat bread with everything though..

So do South Africans... and the French... and Norwegians... and the Danes... and the Scots... etc!!

Just googled some fish pie recipes, actually - Almost every one of them seems to favour green veggie type things.

Yeah, I tend to serve with peas, carrots, green beans. Sometimes sweetcorn. There's just not quite enough pie this time :)

I made a Jamie Oliver one he did in the naked chef. He had baked beans with it and I decided to try it out. Haven't looked back since.

Try giving them green/brown/puy lentils instead of chips or garlic bread. Good carbs, some protein, some roughage. Add to fried mirepoix with bacon or chorizo and add some stock and white wine to cook them out.

Pulses are a great way to cheaply and healthily fill kids' stomachs.

Chips, all pies taste better with chips! or an extra dollop of mash there is never enough in the topping of a pie!
