Hi I was just wondering what I am able to SLI my current card with, its the nVidia 8800GTS 320mb. Would I have to stick with another 8800 in either gts or gtx or a higher model. Advice much appreciated? And extra cooling needed if I went for the SLI setup?

I thought I could SLI it with a 8800GTX at the least?? Or so I was told at the time of buying (not by OC I might add)

Ahhh reread your answer, so I'd have to have my exact same card the GTS .. definitely not the GTX?

Yes exactly the same card but it doesn't have to be by the same manafacturer, for example you could use a BFG 8800 GTS 320mb with a Gainward 8800 GTS 320mb.

You would also need a sli compatible mainboard with a Nvidia chipset on it, but to be honest I would just buy a better card as recomended above.

Thanks guys, I'll stick with the gts for a while then if its not worth adding another gts and maybe upgrade to a diff card later in the year.

u can have my xfx for £30 :) was gonna chuck it on the bay
Ok I'm a newbie lol, is that another 8800? If it's allowed, my email is in my profile. And will it work with my current card etc, thx.

You can only SLI it with another GTS....clock speed doesnt matter as both cards will run at the same speed with the higher clocked card defaulting down to the lower cards specs.

Is there much difference with adding an extra one of these, would I see performance improvement that would be noticeable regularly?

Well, I build my own machines, altho still learning, SLI being one I've not done yet. Is it that much hassle? And is it worth doing seeing as these cards are going fairly cheapo now and I dont wanna buy a new up to date card thats like £300?

In a trade off with hassle v's performance... SLI was a tremendous pain when I played with it a couple of months back, as a willy waving exercise yes it's quite a nice thing to have but in practice NVidia's implementation of the dual GPU is poor imo.

Lame drrivers and game compatibility on top of hardware that's now end of life makes for a bad decision, especially when single card solutions like the GTX280 can be bought for £220~ Less power consumption, quieter and faster with less hassle - bit of a no brainer IMO.

well i did have 8800gts 320 sli and my 3dmark06 score at 4ghz was 15385! now i have a single 260oc and still can't beat that score at 4ghz just a few hundred shy!! but that does not mean to say the sli is better because it aint as i can max games out on all settings apart from crysis as the 320 sli could not.

Aye, that's what I mean by "willy waving". Sure 3Dmark scores are great and all, but in a real world implementation it doesn't really come up to scratch.

I'd like to revisit it now the technology has matured a little bit, but the falling cost of high end single cards makes the whole thing a bit a moot point. Moo.

I remember reading an article in CustomPC magazine about SLI-ing two 8800GTS 320mb cards, the performance in games actually dropped than running just the one card.

Personally I wouldn't bother. Sell the card and treat yourself to a GTX280 on here for £218!!!
