My work have introduced something called 'Pirate Time' (insert pirate jokes here) which basically means that we can use up to 20% of our work hours, per month, on something that has nothing to do with work

For example, today, 2 of the developers are going to have a play with Android code and app building. They are not Android developers but they want to expand their knowledge and it is something that they are interested in.

I am a QA and I would really like to move into Project Management, but I am not sure when that would be possible at the moment. So I was wondering what I can look at during my 'Pirate Time' (horrible name I know but the MD came up with it) which will help me QA better?

Anyone got any ideas? Or have any of you recently used an online tool to learn anything new?

Well do anything that YOU want to do and not what we tell you to do. Let's face it 20% of work time would equate to a lot of letter boxes being visited.

So out of say, a 150 hour month, you can use 30 hours of it (3 and half days) doing bugger all?

Where is this place? I do bugger all anyway. Might as well get paid for it.

Arrrrr, what about setting ye mind to a bit o'piracy, me hearty? Think o' the extra dubloons in yer wage packet.

To be fair, if it's pirate time, surely it's acceptable to spend it getting sloshed on Captain Morgan, ravishing women and plundering Securicor vans (or whatever they're called these days).

erm since they've basically borrowed this idea from google then why not do what they mostly do - use the time to work for the team you'd like to join - why not use your 20% time to assist a project manager

I hope it is genuine 20% time - I get the impression that these things usually turn into 120% time... i.e. you're still end up working at least 40 hours a week towards your main role and the '20%' time ends up being additional hours worked on top of that

Best suggestion so far.

They want you to use 20% of your 'Work' time to do something else? Just go home early.

They will see you as the smartest employee for doing this and immediately promote you.
