What to upgrade!?

So, my current setup is GPU: Gtx 1060 6gb, with CPU: intel i3-8100, and a 1080p 75hz monitor.

I have around £500 to spend, give or take, and i am looking for some advice for what to upgrade.
My possible options i was thinking of are:

i5-8400 (or maybe 8600??) CPU + a 1440p (depending on whether i can run it) or 1080p 144hz monitor
OR
i5-8400 (") CPU + Gtx 1070 mini 8gb and no 144hz monitor
OR
any other suggestions?

I am curious as to whether, with a gtx 1060 and i5-8400 i can run games at 1440p 60+fps
, or whether its better to just get a 1070 and i5-8400 together and keep my plain ol' 1080p 75hz monitor.

Any comments or suggestions are appreciated :)

If you go 1440p you'd also want a new GPU.
If you get a new GPU you'd also want a new CPU.
If you get a new CPU and don't also get a GPU and monitor then it's a bit meh.
So I'd do nothing until you can replace the entire PC, which might be a while because it's pretty recent stuff.

I would suggest monitor and GPU at the same time. Selling your 1060 should net you ~100, I've just seen some videos on the RTX 2060. It looks pretty good, circa 1070Ti performance at 350$. If that translates to £350 I'd get that and a £250 monitor. Then depending on how much the CPU holds you back, an 8400/8600 is more like £100-200 at the next upgrade chance.

So buy 1070 for £300, sell 1060 for £100, and get 1440p 144hz monitor for £300? The one thing holding me back from getting a 1440p monitor which i really have my eyes set on, is my cpu gpu combo, do you know of any issues with the 1070 and 8100 together?

That sounds good. Maybe see where prices land on the 2060.

I think the 8100 will be ok for a lot of titles. Certainly up to 60FPS. If you're wanting higher resolution and refresh rates monitor, a graphics card is the obvious upgrade to do at the same time. CPU can be more unknown from game to game but you'll certainly need more graphics power.

This is exactly my thinking. It does depend on the games you are playing but by going to 1440p (with monitor and ≥1070) you will be putting more stress on the GPU so there is more chance of your CPU holding it's own for a little while till funds allow a CPU change.
