what to use to import cannon 550pics and x100 pics

is it best to stick to the DPP software that came with the cannon for importing raw or is photoshop elements a better idea. and what about x100 pics,the software isn't compatible with Mac osx 10.7.4,is elements ok for that swell?

oh and when i photo imports off my 550d versus the cannon software DPP the DPP seems slightly sharper if thats the right word.do you import directly to aperture or to DPP 1st? thanks again

wow thanks for that comprehensive answer james. that covers it very well. am i correct in thinking that with Aperture i can use just that for both the cannon and the fuji without having 2 separate softwares installed. by the way does aperture do the slideshows with music like iPhoto and how does Aperture work in conjunction with my iPad, at the moment I phot syncs with the iPad?
