What tools do I need to build a PC?

Just a screw driver.
However pliers can come in handy as when I built my PC I didn't tighten the mobo standoffs into to the case properly. So when I fitted the mobo the screws were loose and became attached to the mobo. I then had to use some pliers to gently hold them in place and then use a screw driver to loosen them

ifixit kits are overkill but some of the bits they have come in handy especially when working on smaller components in particular watercooling.

Generally a philips head screwdriver, preferably a long and a short one.
Anti static strap (not essential, never used one personally)
Cable ties or straps
Scissors
Needle pliers for mobo standoffs which can be tight.
Allen key set (some cases do require these tools)

Realistically with the right case you only need a Philips screwdriver.

Sockets to fit a motherboard standoff can come in handy as well, unless you fancy mashing the brass with pliers. Anti-static strap/mat is mildly recommended, but you can get away with using the supplied bag and building it up in the box as long as you're not wearing socks on a nylon carpet.

Last time I saw a generic PC toolkit, then still had ROM chip inserting tools and other nonsense in them!

I was looking around and saw the iFixIt tool kits. So they would be overkill would they?

I got one of the ifixit Mahi toolkits and yes they are overkill for what you need but it is an excellent little set to have around the house. The way the thing spins while you can apply pressure at the end makes it a joy to use and I love mine and use them a lot.
Like others have said you only need a philips screwdriver in most cases.

I was looking at these kits and some of them look pretty useful for other things as well like you said. I might get one myself I think seeing as I have absolutely no tools of my own at the moment.

OcUK/Phanteks have you covered with a decent magnetic screwdriver, that also includes a hex socket for motherboard standoffs:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £26.69 (includes shipping: £8.70)

This seems to carry all you need that's for sure. A tad pricey but it is branded.

I still have a screwdriver set that came with my chaintech motherboard oh so long ago it is 4 piece stacked lol

I will second wanting a long screwdriver or extension bar for a bitted screwdriver set. I wouldn't have been able to install my cpu cooler without using a long extension bar so I could actually get the bit down the the screws.

If your cpu cooler isn't that big or you're using an aio then shouldn't be an issue though.

Can pick up a LED work light for 20 quid, day white, super bright, stick that on pointing at the case and you'll see everything, great for decorating and also art work to (fraction of the cost compared to "for art" lights and just as good - just don't have pointed at your face).
