What type of bike should I get?

I bought a hybrid with lockout front suspension, 2700 miles later and still love it. Being able to have the suspension when you need it is really nice (on bridle ways or bumpy foot paths if you have to use them to avoid traffic ;))

Also you get a better gears with a hybrid, I found with my old mtb I would be spinning like crazy to keep at 20mph.

i'm going to throw my controversial choice in here...go cyclocross. Light and quick like a roadbike but with a slighter tougher frame which has spring built in. I have a 20 mile commute each way every day and i ride one of these. Good for towpaths, roads and fields.

I would go with this, too. If I were buying a bike to commute to work on now, I would be looking at something like the Genesis Croix De Fer ; steel frame with disc brakes, clearance for mudguards and the ability to fit a rack. I guess it depends on how much you're willing to spend on a bike, though :)

I'm on the Cycle to Work scheme so went to 3 proper bike shops who asked about my commute (all road) and all 3 put me on a road bike.
Just waiting for it to come.
I've found Halfords prices for accessories to be the best with 3 for 2 offers and online you get 20% off.

I personally don't like the body position on a road bike... A hybrid is good because it's quite comfortable and at the same time you have good and fast tyres compared to a mountain bike.

So I say go for a hybrid

How long is your commute? I'm looking at C2W, starting this autumn, for a 15 mile commute into Manchester. I'm thinking a road bike is far and away my best bet. I can buy a basic hybrid or mountain bike for my spare time out of my own pocket with a bit of saving, but I figure I'm probably best using C2W to get something more respectable if I'm planning to use it 5 days a week.

Im thinking of getting the following for biking to work...

I wouldn't mind getting a road bike, but then you are limited to just the road, it would be horrible to say that i couldn't go on a bike ride with my mates as they will be going off road for some of it... all bases covered. but if your only going to be riding on the road, then it would have to be a road bike fo' sho'.

thats going to be a pig to ride to work.
having ridden a MB to work for a few months before I moved to the road bike I got on C2W I'd say go road or if you want it for off road go for cyclocross
really you want to be spending more than that tho,
I'd say get a jake the snake but they are out of the range now.
these two are nice
