Brendan Rodgers in the Independent:

"I know there are three types of supporters at every club. Number one is those who, no matter who the manager is, they love their club and they will love their manager whoever it is, because Liverpool is their life and their passion and they love their club. The second group is supporters who will accept you, but to earn their real respect you will have to be successful. That's fine. The third group are the critics and you never change them, ever. Ever. If you win 4-0 it should have been five, if you win the league you should have won three. I will never worry about that group because you can never affect them. If you do a good job you are proving them right but they [won't acknowledge they've been] proved wrong so they will kill you even more. I only want to work with the people who love the club.

"I have always had good relations with the media and with the supporters. I'm open and honest. I understand that not everybody will want me here. But that's part of the dance."

I would have said group 1 but Hodgson's tenure at Liverpool changed that for me and I'm now a group 2 fan.

Whoever you support, what type of fan are you?

Everything he's said up to now has been positive but that's a worrying statement. I might be interpreting it wrong but it reads likes he's saying if you don't love me you don't love the club. As far as I'm concerned the club is a completely separate entity to the manager and players and you can love one, two or all three without it making you more or less of a supporter.

Does seem a little needlessly negative, what's wrong with saying I aim to win over the fans by getting results?

Anyway, what reasons has he got to think he'll by hated by some even if he's successful? People that win things with Liverpool are generally regarded as heroes, why should that be different now?

I don't read anything negative into it to be honest. I just think it is a fair assessment of how fans are.

Surely every Liverpool supporter will be in his second category until he's proven himself though. Why would anyone love him when he's yet to even manage a game for us?

I think you're interpreting it wrong. The only mention of love for the club is with supporter group one; he doesn't say that those that either need convincing or don't support the manager therefore do not love the club.

His breakdown of different types of supporters isn't too far wrong tbf. You get supporters that will support all things <insert club>, you get those that will give the manager the benefit of the doubt but he needs to prove himself and you get those that no matter what, always find something to whine about.

You're placing too much emphasis on the loving the manager part. All I think he's trying to say is that no matter what, some fans will back the manager.

To paraphrase then;

Group 1 - The blinkered
Group 2 - The sensible
Group 3 - Nickg

I don't think I've ever known many fans that fall into the first group, as most no matter how much they love the club may not always love the manager. Obviously excluding young fans of clubs who haven't changed their manager lately (e.g. MU) so don't know any different.

I'm group 2.

I think group 1 was a lot of Leeds fans despite what ridsdale did to the club, but with bates everyone is 2 or 3 (just about).

First group and being a Forest fan my patience has been tested over this last decade with regards to this!
He is right but saying something like that so early in to a job? I don't know, you can convert a lot of group 2 into 3 quite quickly with statements like that.

I think you can be a type 1 in a smaller club. But in a big one, if results don't come, most fans rapidly go against the manager...

I'm group 2 at club level but probably closer to group 1 at international level. I've always wanted England to succeed regardless of who the manager is, or what the fixture is. I wasn't even particurly anti-Taylor and aside from Hoddle and Sven I think I've supported most of the managers. This is quite unusual I think as in recent years I see many people showing lethargy towards their national side relative to club football.

I think his statement is very fair or am i in group one and will support anything blindly. He said he is an honest man so we better be prepared to hear the bitter truth from now and onwards! I think in foot ball you need to lie here and there at least for the mind games' sake.

I think i am in Group 2 but i seem to take so long to blame the manager but i am less kind to players!

On a serious notei think DM needs his own group!.

When he likes you he is in group 1 when he doesn't like you he is at the extreme of group 3 (Nothing can you do to change his thinking whether good or bad!)
