Hi there,

G/F has an Advent T9305 and just wondering what is the best CPU it can be upgraded to?

CPU-Z says it's a socket 775 with an MSI MS-7046 with a 915P/915G Chipset.

DDR RAM with a Prescott P4-HT @ 3ghz atm. I have a feeling that the best it will take is a P-D and not the Core2's but here's hoping! :D

Taken from the mobo manual I found online:

CPU
Supports Intel® Pentium 4 Prescott LGA775 processors in LGA775 package.
Supports up to Pentium 4 3XX, 5XX sequence processor or higher speed.
Supports Intel Hyper-Threading Technology.
Chipset
Intel® 915P chipset
- Supports FSB 533/800MHz.
- Supports DDR 400/333 memory interface.
Intel® ICH6 chipset
- Hi-Speed USB (USB2.0) controller, 480Mb/sec, up to 8 ports.
- 4 Serial ATA ports with transfer rate up to 150 Mbytes/sec.
- 1 channel Ultra ATA 100 bus Master IDE controller.
- PCI Master v2.3, I/O APIC.
- ACPI 2.0 Compliant.

Now in the manual it says it won't take more than a 5XX series but it has the following chip:

CPU Type Intel Pentium 4 630, 3000 MHz (15 x 200)

It's only the cpu that needs upgrading really as they don't game (X300:rolleyes:), it has 1GB RAM with WinXP so 600MB+ free at startup, 250GB HDD with 170GB+ free etc. It just doesn't repsond nicely with the P4 so a Core2 would be great.

If it can't take a Core2 what's the best it can take and would the upgrade be worth it?

Any more info can be given if needed.

Cheers very much guys & gals, Doug.

I think you may be stuck with a P4 Prescott or Cedar Mill to be honest, so 5xx or 6xx CPU.

Just for a laugh I tried putting in a Q6600 into a 775 mobo with a 915 chipset and it was no go. Highest CPU this particular mobo would take was a P4 3.6.

It won't take a Pentium Dual Core or Core 2 Duo, so you can only keep to P4s. I wouldn't really bother swapping out a 3GHz for a quicker model (e.g. upto 3.6) as for general use you won't notice the difference.

Three things I would check though -
- Is the memory running dual channel (is it 2 x 512MB?) as this can give a boost over a single 1GB stick.
- What antivirus are you running? This can make a system sluggish, e.g. Norton.
- How long as XP been installed for? Again it will become slow over time, so might be worth doing a clean install. I would at least suggest running CCleaner though.

Cheers for the replies guys.

Guess if they want to upgrade it's a new Mobo + CPU & probably RAM as they have DDR not DDR2.

Will advise them to do a re-install as it is quite sluggish now just booting-up/logging on and using IE etc.

Cheers again, Doug.
