What usage will Ram struggle at

Im hitting around 4.6GB out of my 6GB in some games now (bf3) and Im wondering whether only having just over another 1GB on tap is enough, will this start to effect performance, or is there still plenty of headroom?

It's fine (plenty of headroom with games) - if you look at it more that your system is wasting 1.4Gb and are unlikely to use it anytime soon with games, it may make you feel better.

Anything that has free ram and not churning to the page file is good.
