What was PES5 like on the 360, controller-wise?

Looking for some honest opinions from people who have played PES5 on the PS2 and 360, assuming PES5 ran on the 360. I never got PES5 on my normal xbox cos I of the thought of playing without proper double shoulder buttons put me off so I stuck with the ps2 version. Now PES6 is coing out on the 360 I am thinking of buying a 360 just for PES initially, but obviously would like to know peoples real experience with the controller compared to the ps2 controller specifically with PES, and I'm guessing PES5 in the 360 will be pretty similar to PES6 controller-wise.

I've had PES1-5 on PS2 and PES4-5 on Xbox and all in all the controls are easily adapted too.

If your good at the game it doesn't matter which controller you use.

I had no problems with PES5 on the original Xbox, so I would guess that the 360 pad wont be a problem either.

If I remember rightly the black and white buttons had there uses but were horribly placed. 360 controller is better suited with the bumper buttons.

I play PES5 on the 360 almost every day, and I find the pad to be very well suited to the game, it's now pretty much identical to the PS2 control scheme.

The only problem with pes5 on the xbox was that you could not use black or white with a shoulder and pressing a button at the same time. however with the 360 controller you have two shoulder buttons so there are no problems anymore.

I've had no problems with PES5 on the 360. The controller setup is perfect and I had no problems using it, though I never played it on the original xbox.

I knew there would be a negative view as soon as I said I'd go for it :) I guess I'll just go to Game and have a fiddle with the 360 on display, close my eyes and mentally pull off some PES moves to get a feel for it. D-pad all the way for PES imo.

Personally I didn't like it much, I find the d-pad and buttons shoddy in comparison.

I've got to agree with Sutters there, the d-pad is terrible on the 360 controller. I had used a converter for the original xbox which enabled the use of a ps2 pad. Nothing like that is available for the 360 afaik, so I will be buying a new pad for pro evo 6....

The d-pad on that looks half decent.

If you use the analogue stick anyway then the normal 360 pad should be fine tbh.

By the way, ps2 is officially the premier pad for pro evo.....

During our lunchtime PES sessions, most players opt for the PS2 version of the game, because we consider the PS2 Dual Shock as the ultimate controller for playing PES. How does the 360 controller compare - and does it present different challenges?

Seabass: Well if I say this I might upset the Microsoft people, but our feeling is when you play the 360 version you don't get the same play feeling as you do with the PS2 controller. We think this is a very big issue and we think this is very important when the users play the game. Of course we are talking with Microsoft constantly about this issue and the current play feel you get with the 360 controller is a little different. So what we're doing is of course we're not just talking and crying about it, we're doing development and research and making sure that the control feel - even if you play with a 360 controller - you get a similar feeling that you got from the PS2 or PlayStation controllers.

Microsoft recently said they may do a 360 controller specially tuned for FPS's with more sensitivity and more feel, is that something Seabass might embrace in Pro Evo?

Seabass: Well it's a very interesting story and of course we're always intereted if they create new controllers. When I was talking to Microsoft the biggest thing was that they didn't realise how important the D-pad was - especially to the Japanese players. I realised actually that reverse shock, where the European players used the analogue stick more than I thought. So both we and Microsoft were shocked about this, we were talking about this. Whereas in the past you could connect the PS2 controller to the Xbox, now I' ve heard the Microsoft will probably not allow this in the 360 versions, therefore we can't cry about this, we just need to continue the research and development on the controller aspect and we'll keep on trying to improve this.

Winning Eleven 6 on my Gamecube was pretty easy to control, especially because the analogue stick is where it's supposed to be...

Those people that play Pro Evo with the D-Pad should really learn with the sticks. Seriously, I taught/forced myself to use them for Pro Evo 4 on PC because I couldn't play for long without pain and found it easier to control and a lot easier on the thumbs. Any extended length of play on PES with the D-Pad used to hurt, a lot! The new 360 pad will be bang on for Pro Evo.

I'll back you up on that one.

Unfortunately you just don't have the same control using the analogue stick so it's d-pad all the way for me.

Perhaps with extended play you could get used to the stick but no matter how good you get using analogue it would never be as good as the d-pad.

Well at first you don't have the same control, but as with anything else all it takes is a bit effort and I became a better player using the sticks.

The thing which surprises me is Microsofts apparent admission they skimped on the d-pad cos they thought no one used it. All I heard upto now is people raving about how good the 360 controller is and that, I guess virtually no games rely on the d-pad. Reading that article has put me right off the 360 version for now. Back to my original position of staying ps2 and waiting for the ps3 version next year.

Not sure it this will mean a lot but I have been playing the Fifa 07 Demo, and as bad as that is, I have no problem with the controls using the 360 pad and the games "new analogue" setup, which are exactly the same controls for PES. Seriously, there aill be no problem playing PES6, unless you are a pad whore :p

I tend to agree, except with the 360 pad - pes 5 is much easier with the analogue stick here. It isn't as hard to adjust to ether, infact I actually prefer it now.

Honestly, I've never had any pain from 5 hour + session on Pro. I've played with the stick quite a bit before but I really couldn't play the way I wanted with it. I do prefer the d-pad a lot, I think it's more precise. The 360 d-pad put me off playing DOA4. Well, that and i'm rubbish at it. :o

For the 360 version it's going to have to be the stick, can imagine my mates won't want to play it though :( .
