What was there before the BIG BANG?

we are tiny specs on a tiny spec, in a tiny galaxy, which is another tiny spec, amongst about a billion billion other galaxys.
Do people still actually believe that god made the earth??
Isnt about time religous people woke up? and gave all their gold to homeless people?

Theres nothing to dispell that a god couldnt have made the earth, or the other billion planets, suns and galaxies. They should keep the gold.

I thought that although its expanding it reaches a point where it will stop expanding and then start contracting, back into a point where all the mass in the universe goes into one minuscule volume and then boom Big Band v2 and then expand, contract Big Bang v3 etc etc etc.

I may be wrong but that's what I always thought, although I'm not a physicist and everything I just said could be false.

Was it not discovered that the expansion of the universe is accelerating, meaning there will never be a big crunch? Something about eventually all stars burning themselves out and a big freeze?

I love how at the LHC, theyre producing 'mini' Big Bangs..... So theyre just bangs then.. :P

There's nothing to dispel that I couldn't have. Give me the gold.

The universe only has worth because we humans give it worth, regardless of who or what made it in the first place, give the gold to everyone!

Edit: Okay I got carried away there and went off on a tangent.

Thing is, how long is a piece of string to god? How would god interpret a year of 'our' time? How long is a 'week' to god?

Look, i believe in god, some don't. Do i care? No. Each to thier own i say

Probably M-Theory. Unlimited amount of universes floating in a hyperspace + two collide = a big bang. mavity is so weak because it's leaking from the universe next to us, kinda explains why gravitons cannot be detected (apart from in their absence). Essentially they reside in another dimension.

Using my very basic knowledge of what a Black Hole is means that at one point our Universe was a Universe sized Star which makes it a ridiculous theory

NASA has proven that a supermassive black hole could eat the universe.

http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/image_feature_1607.html

So the smaller black holes eat the galaxys and in trillions of years time there will be only black holes
A supermassive black hole merges with smaller ones then when there is nothing left
the supermassive will collapse into itself and will be small then BANG Here we go again :)

Just a theory like all the rest.

Not really:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitational_singularity

The two most important types of spacetime singularities are curvature singularities and conical singularities. Singularities can also be divided according to whether they are covered by an event horizon or not (naked singularities). According to general relativity, the initial state of the universe, at the beginning of the Big Bang, was a singularity. Another type of singularity predicted by general relativity is inside a black hole: any star collapsing beyond a certain point would form a black hole, inside which a singularity (covered by an event horizon) would be formed, as all the matter would flow into a certain point (or a circular line, if the black hole is rotating). These singularities are also known as curvature singularities.

Ah but what if the theory of a multiverse is how the universes (Universi?!?) is made up? Hawking has hinted many times that it's more and more likely that our Universe is just one Universe among many

I subscribe to the 'multiverse' theory. How this would be proven though would take one hell of a telescope!

We are fetal in terms of our discovery and understanding of our Universe.

Yep and that's why I have depressing thoughts of:

What's the point in life, sure you can go about, do things but after you die you are no more, and the only way you live on is through offspring and through stories photos and memories. But then when the sun explodes and Earth is destroyed and all these things are gone, and there is nothing.

So what's the ****ing point of anything.

****.

These are thoughts I have mainly when I have my eyes closed whilst trying to go to sleep.

For me I am glad we live in the time when we don't have to put up with religious bile excreated to save its self. We know more about how everything works than at any time before. The sooner we get rid of the modern religions the better I find it ironic that religions like paganism actually worshipped that that mattered - The Sun and the land. For me knowing I'm here and that's it is a comforting thought.

There is that Chinese proverb "may you live in interesting times" is so true. I'd also add is so important to realise when you've never had it so good, by that I mean there comes a point in history when everything changes - we are at that point now.

So how long before Modular's account gets banned for spam? Or at least his post count reset?

Maybe time to consider stopping GD posts counting towards the post count?

yeah thanks for that memphus

Im just interested in other people opinions on a subject that facinates me.

What i've always wondered, and i shouldn't.... is not what was there, but what created what was there. at some point there had to be nothing, how can something come from nothing? Technically nothing should exist becuase you can't get something from absolutely nothing. Evern if there was a black hole before the big bang, how did the black hole get there? and what made what made the black hole?

It's a never ending unanswerable question that you could only throw a million theorys at. It's madening thinking about it.
