I want to start doing a bit of weights at home.

Will this set be ok?

York 50kg Spinlock Vinyl Barbell/Dumbbell Set.
# 4 x 1.1kg.

# 6 x 2.3kg.

# 6 x 4.5kg.

# 2 x 45cm spinlock bars with plastic sleeves.

# 6 x spinlock collars.

# 1 x 165cm spinlock bar.

I am about 5ft 8" and weigh about 65Kg...should that make any difference!

Thanks

Ross

Iron discs cost a little more, but worth it over vinyl versions. There’s concrete inside the vinyl that can break up with use. Get a 6’ barbell instead of 5’ because it’s more compatible with any benches / equipment you may get. 50kg is fine to start with, and you can always buy extra weight plates when required.

Depending on what training you’ll be doing, you’re more than likely need a bench of some sort. Chins and dips are ‘must do’ exercises too. Lat pulldowns should not be mentioned in the same breath as chins, IMHO. Do chins.

I’m sure some will swear you need ‘olympic’ bars/weights (2” vs 1” ends/bore), but unless you’re planning to be a bodybuilder / power lifter, 1” is fine, and you can share the weight plates from barbell to dumbbells. They’ll also tell you you need a rack, but not essential for a beginner.

Check out Argos and World of Health and Leisure (London E17) –great prices and service.

90% of people over-train. Check out Stuart McRobert to make sure you don’t do the same

Would this be the right one then?

York 50kg Spinlock Cast Iron Barbell/Dumbbell Set.

# 6 x 0.5kg, 6 x 1.25kg, 4 x 2.5kg, 4 x 5kg discs.

# 2 x 35.5cm spinlock bars.

# 1 x 152cm spinlock bar.

# 6 spinlock collars.

How much does that lot cost? Roughly?

I don't know much about this stuff, but I am also thinking about buying my own weights.

I'd be with Mike_T generally the irons are much "comfier" than Vinyl however if you're just starting out you'll rather have a 5kg Vinyl dropped on your foot than a 5kg iron...

Generally a 5' bar (1" width) you can generally load quite well with 2 good irons anda few vinyls plus if you get a solid bar it can take 300-350lbs without really a bend

so a good set? Worth buying? I am only starting out.

It costs £54 from a very well known catalogue company.

Firstly 65kg at 5ft8 can be quickly changed with a good routine and diet in place.

Anything that gets you lifting is good really :)

What are your goals? Do you want to just get stronger or have a gym body?

Because as people above me have said you will outgrow that set incredibly quickly if you take lifting anywhere close to seriously. For example my first weights were a Marcy 70kg set.Within 2 months I needed more plates. The amount you'll be able to lift will improve very quickly at first.

Also remember the 50kg is made up of 40kg of discs and the other 10kg is all the bars. You'll only be able to have a max of 45kg on the barbell and do you really want the aggravation of taking all those little weights on and off?

Having said all that it is as good a starting point as any really but be prepared to add to it later.

Another point to make is it's a cheap way to find out if you have the motivation to take it up properly.Buying an expensive setup is a costly way of discovering you don't want to lift :D

Anyway good luck in your choice and remember to back it up with a good bench and a better diet :)
