What will happen if I do this?

Can anyone provide a definitive answer to this question? First the issue - when I first installed Vista a year ago now, the command or file for Vista Backup only ever worked once but never since, I always get an error message with text saying backup file missing or corrupted. Now it's not the end of the world as I use Acronis 10 which probably does a much better job.

The question - if a were to reinstall Vista which would wipe the HD then use Acronis recovery to reinstall the backup image prior to the Vista reinstall would the Vista backup fault still be there or would reinstalling Windows have cured it? Theory states it should have cured the problem but would not using Acronis to reinstall a backup of the old drive not overwrite the new install so the fault would still be there.

If anyone does know the answer thanks in advance

So your basically just reinstalling windows and then wiping it and replacing it with an image from when the problem still existed?
If thats correct it would do nothing to solve your problem you might as well just try a format and use the image which is basically what your doing

I think with Acronis you can choose what options you want to restore ie programmes and documents.

I remember seeing this when doing a restore on my pc but did not look further into it.

Yes you can, I've had a further look at the options - I am as I write this doing another backup to included everything but the OS. Hopefully I can then reinstall Vista then use the Acronis for all my apps and data etc. Just to be on the safe side though I have to Acronis images i.e. a full one and the one I have just mentioned.

doing this is liable to cause lots of problems as the system registry will not be correct for all the software coming from the Acronis image.

Hmm! how right you were, I tried a complete new install then restored all my apps and data from the Acronis image. Whilst everything went across OK the programs didn't actually reinstall but were just there and the drive space allocation seemed to have doubled i.e. should have been approx 60gig and was then showing around 120gig used. To be honest for a Vista backup programme that I will probably never use I just couldn't be bothered spending days sorting out all this mess out so I have took the easy option and restored the previous Acronis full image again.

After all as the Vista backup file is the only corrupt file and Acronis is much more configurable it's hardly the end of life as we know it - is it Jim?
;)

It just annoys me that I can't get to the bottom of this issue though - the error message is as follows -
Task image is corrupt or has been tampered with 0x80041321

Well it's only taken me 12 months but I've finally fixed the above problem. I have scoured the Internet including all the Microsoft sites for a resolution. The problem is recognised complete with error code, however, I have been unable to find anyone who had a fix. Finally after reading many articles but no fix I went into the system32 folder and by dogged persistence found what I thought was the offending file, took a deep breath and deleted it. I then clicked backup once again and hey presto Vista started the backup process.

The daft thing is now that I have fixed it I will almost certainly never use it as Acronis does a much better job, it's just that I can't abide things that should work but don't. I shall sleep a little more peaceful from now on. :D

what was the file

It was the WindowsBackup file. However, finding it was like unwrapping a Russian Doll, folders within sub folders none of which had a name to give you a clue what was inside what. Finally found it in "tasks", Microsoft, Windows, WindowsBackup Windows Defender. Why the Microsoft help site which lists this as an issue but doesn't offer a solution is a mystery as once the file had been located and deleted then Vista backup ran like a dream.

what's wrong with search?

Well your making an assumption that I knew the file I was looking for, I didn't. If you had taken the trouble to read my post thoroughly you would have known that although this problem is listed as an error on MS's own site there isn't unfortunately a fix or anywhere else on the Internet for that matter. I originally posted this fault on this forum many months ago, where was your input then? It always helps if you know what your looking for. Your suggestion is akin to asking my TomTom to navigate to a destination without actually providing the location - how's that work then?

my bad, I missed post number 8 and just assumed from "I always get an error message with text saying backup file missing or corrupted" that the error told you the file you were looking for.

I read this thread when you first posted it, but didn't reply as I've never used the vista backup or Acronis. My media's all backed up and reinstalling the OS doesnt bother me.

I stand corrected.

Well I am obsessive about backiing up and I never have less than three images of each of my three computers stored on three different drives. However, having to install the OS is an option of last resort given my 80gig of data with a huge proportion of that being installed programmes. Last time I reinstalled the OS it took me nearly three days to get everything back exactly as it was before. At least with Acronis it's all done in around 30 minutes and everything is back as it was and your up and away with no OS or programmes to reinstall.
