What would be an upgrade from a Virgin Media SuperHub2?

Hi, I've currently got a Virgin Media Superhub2 as my modem and router on a 100Mbs connection. I'm happy with the general performance of the wired connections but the Wifi performance is getting a bit annoying. The signal doesn't seem very strong across my house and it keeps just dropping out requiring a reboot.
So I'm thinking of switching it to modem only mode and getting a dedicated Wifi router but I'm unsure what to look at to make it a definite upgrade.
I definitely need it to support concurrent dual band (2.4/5GHz) networks and ideally be a stronger signal giving better coverage than the Superhub2, AC support would be a bonus but I don't currently have any devices that need it. I'd like to be able to have a separate Guest network if possible and something the Superhub is very lacking is good monitoring capabilities. I want to be able to see detailed info on connection statistics for individual devices and ideally be able to limit bandwidth on a per device basis as well.
Looking through the shop here something like the Asus RT-N66U looks pretty good but how does it really compare in the real world to the Superhub. If it's going to be a noticable improvement then I could justify the price but it's a lot to spend if it's not really much better?

Many Thanks,

Ross

I have a similar setup, the Virgin Superhub is in modem only mode which is connected to a TP Link Archer C7, has the AC wifi, allows guest access to be setup on it.

Considering the last router I was running for the connection, this TP Link can be tweaked and changed within an inch of its life.

This is the router available on OcUK:

I'm looking for something similar, I still have the original SH1 running in modem/router mode.
Would like to put it into modem only & use a router for better wifi /speed coverage in the house.
Did this a couple of years ago with an old D615 router, but when the speeds hit 152mb it couldn't cope.

The link provided looks good, but will be interested in seeing what else is suggested.

I've tried a few with my Virgin connection. Tried a cheap and crappy old Linksys router, I forget the model - well, you can guess the results. Went up to an Asus AC56U - speed was great, range was awful on both 5ghz and 2.4ghz channels. Currently on a Linksys EA6900 (same as this one here) - very fast and very good range. Had it installed for about 2 months now and everything is still good.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I hadn't really considered the TP-Link models but that one does look good. I the Linksys one although looking good is just a bit too much for me to justify, I think £100 is probably my limit.

TP Link stuff gets fair/good reviews usually and is reasonably priced. Thing is, I've learnt that if you want stability, speed and range then you need to spend a reasonable amount.

Thanks again guys, has anyone here tried any of the WRT firmwares, are they much of an improvement over the stock versions and are they worth getting a compatible router for?

I personally feel wireless performance comparisons between my asus n66u and the superhub 1 i used is only slightly better than the SH, guess it depends on a lot of factors though like interference.

Where the Asus n66u performs better is stability and awesome custom firmwares.

My n66u had an uptime of 6 months when I lasted checked and the only time that changes is when I reboot it for any reason.

The n66u is currently £84.99 at certain places, absolute bargain!!!!

I got a TP Link WDR3600 about a year ago and flashed it with a DD-WRT firmware. It has been absolutely fine, no dropped connections at all and Speed is good. Thats connecting to a VM superhub in modem only mode.

I've got a Superhub 2ac in modem only mode connected to a AC87U, can't fault it. Whole house is bathed in ultra fast wireless .ac with no black spots.
