What would be better for my PC?

forking out £100 on 8gb of 1600 DDR3 or...

Upgrading my current 8GB of 1333 DDR3 to 16GB for £68?

I play a lot of Football Manager which is really ram and processor hungry.

Why would you spend £100 on 8GB? e.g. for £45 you could get this if you're set on 1600MHz or this otherwise.

Aaaanyway. Why do you feel the need for an upgrade? I suspect neither option will make any difference you can notice unless FM uses wildly more RAM than I expect.

Ok Thanks, the current ram i have is PC3-10600U 1333MHZ DDR3, what ram would be compatible with it to take me up to 16GB? (need 2 x 4gb sticks)

Technically any RAM over 1333MHz/1600MHz is overclocked, hence the (o.c).

To be honest, most games at the moment don't take advantage of more than 8gb of RAM. 16gb would be plenty.

I use the TeamGroup Vulcan 2133MHz modules and they behave brilliantly. They also have a lifetime warranty with OCUK which is good.

I'll admit I've got 32gb installed at the moment, but only because I work with 3D design and that does need more than 16gb when running detailed stress analysis simulations.

P.S. What processor are you using?

only a i5-2310 @2.9GHZ at the moment, planning on getting a nicer LGA1155 i7 soon (can you recommend one for me? I do a lot of gaming and photo editing etc)and a Nvidia GTX 970 to go with my new PC bits.

The only i7 currently available for socket 1155 is the i7 3770k. If OCUK don't have any in stock, you coulde have a look around. OCUK do have the i2500K in stock which is better than yours and unlocked i.e. overclockable.

The 970GTX is way better than what I'm running. For gaming you're way better off with the 970 and it'll handle photo editing fine as it's designed for the consumer market. The machine I use at work uses an Nvidia Quadro, but personally I'd steer clear of those because they are useless for gaming.

You only need a Quadro/AMD FirePro if you're doing a lot of 3D modelling and rendering but most render software still relies on the CPU/RAM.

Thats weird because my Motherboards website states there is loads of i7 LGA1155 processors available for this board :S

Your motherboard supports a variety of different processors, from the i3 to the i7 - all using socket LGA1155. The problem is that LGA1155 is no longer current.

Sandybridge/Ivybridge has been superseeded by Haswell - socket LGA1150. The Ivybridge i7 3770K is an excellent CPU. Unfortunately OCUK don't have any in stock, but it's available from OCUK competitors hence why I can't post the link here (forum rules).

Football manager is almost certainly bottlenecking on the processor, as would photo editing. You probably won't notice the difference between 8GB and 16GB.

The 3770k would set you back nearly £300 and is the most powerful CPU for your socket. The i5 3570k would be about £200 and runs significantly faster than what you've got at the moment. Personally I wouldn't upgrade the processor unless I was going to keep the machine for a long time.
