What would be faster??

Hi Guys,

Hoping to tap into that wealth of knowledge again. I'm going to be purchasing components for a new C2D E8500 system and have a question regarding the RAM, specifically DDR2 1066Mhz and DDR3/1333 or 1600 MHz (4GB)

I orginally was going for an Asus P5Q-E or Maxiumus II motherboard with 4GB Corsair Dominator 1066MHz at latencies of 5-5-5-15-2T. I then decided to entertain the idea of going for Corsair Twinx XMS3 DDR3 RAM (either 1333Mhz or 1600Mhz, both having latencies of 9-9-9-24) on the Asus Maximus Extreme, running Vista Ultimate 64 on both.

I am looking to overclock the C2D E8500 to over 4Ghz and so am wondering what is going to be the best solution? Now the novice in me would be to answer "go with DDR3 - higher frequency - its faster right?" But, after reading some info elsewhere, I'm not so sure.

Would going for the lower frequency lower latency RAM be quicker or going for the DDR 3? I know RAM will limit the overclock if it is not up to the task, but would this DDR 3 RAM actually be slower than the DDR2 stuff??

The price difference between the DDR2 and DDR3 is only about £20 or so, and £10-£40 on the motherboards, so I'm not too concerned about the money side, although if the perfomance increase for the DDR3 is going to be so absolutely minimal and not affect the CPU overclock at all, then I would go with the DDR2 option.

Many thanks in advance for any advice and especially if anyone can explain a bit to me about why the DDR2 would be faster than the DDR3 would be appreciated. I have read the FAQ on RAM but I didn't see anything in there covering higher frequency/higher CAS vs lower frequency lower CAS. I hope that makes sense?

Cheers :)

I think the lower latency of the DDR2 will be better for you. I have an E6600 (2.4GHz) overclocked to 3.6GHz with DDR2 6400 Ram so it shouldn't be a problem getting yours to 4GHz+

Hi Gaz,

Yeah the latencies on the DDR2 are certainly a lot lower than the DDR3, but would the increased frequency of the DDR3 result in better performance despite the higher latencies? This is what I'm trying to ascertain, as I'm a bit of a fraggle when it comes to the technical stuff lol. :D

I'm also factoring in that going for a DDR3 motherboard will future proof myself a bit for when the manufacturing improves on the DDR3 technology and results in lower latencies and by that time lower prices too.

Actually, I think I just found my answer in a PCstats article
