If you're assigning a static IP address to a network card via windows TCP/IP settings - is there anything that could make it revert back to ... I dunno... either getting a DHCP assigned address, or some other (old) static IP address?

Could it be an identical IP Address already exists on the network?

I can't think of anything (else).

Is it a standalone PC or on a domain?

If it's on a domain, then I guess it could be some kinda group policy thing....... but that's just a guess.

Setting it through TCP/IP usually just throws up an error if there is a duplicate IP on the network... and you have to change settings to make it obtain an IP by DHCP.

Can't think of anything that makes it reset specifically if you have put in the IP you want to use.. other than Windows having a weird hissy fit or using rollback.

while messing about with adding a PC to a domain in MS virutal machine I have noticed that my XP machines occasionally reset its static IP to a 169.192 IP address for some reason?? but it only occured when actually adding it to the domain.

what IP is it changing it too?
