What would cause my net' to disconnect while.....downloading ;)

I'm on VirginMedia 50mb.

I was downloading...something...using Transmission on Mac.

3 attempts and after a few minutes my modem would disconnect, hard reset would be needed to get it back on.

This has just started. Is it Virgin or perhaps Transmission is flooding my net somehow?

Any advice welcome, thanks.

turn off ipflood in the sevices on the superhub (assuming thats what you have?!)

Apple AirPort Extreme

The Apple is a router, but presumably you're using it in tandem with a SuperHub modem/router with the option that rah^ describes.

It isn't the superhub its the original modem released when 50mb first came out. Black with blue lights.

I had Transmission set to 999 connections. Doh. Default to 200 and it *seems* ok

don't change it if it ain't broke - you were allowing too many connections, effectively ddosing yourself lol.
