What would happen if i try to power this with a 350w PSU?

In acme's chair.
If i try to run a rig with the following specs on a 350w PSU, will it all end in fire and tears, will it refuse to power on, or will it run fine until i stress it and then it will just cut out?

Intel Pentium D 3.00GHz
2GB DDR2 800MHz (limited to 533MHz by motherboard)
Radeon HD 4890 1GB
1x 7200RPM SATA HDD
1x DVD-RW Drive

I KNOW that this PSU is stupidly underpowered for the job, i'm just curious... Will it be able to buzz along at say... 25% usage with that PSU?

alternatively, can i safely run the GPU on a seperate power supply?
I'm cheaping out here, throwing a load of old parts together.

Something along the lines of

But in all seriousness, it depends on the brand, if it's a decent one then it will probably be alright or just cut out. If it's not, then just shell our £30 for a half decent one and save the hassle

possibly, only due to it blowing, only seen this happen on very few occasions though. play it safe, buy a cheapy 400/500w for about 25 quid but get a decent brand one.

It proabably won't post and if it does it will probably blow the PSU. Most likely a boring internal fuse, rather than a big bang.

The Radeon HD 4890 1GB has poor power management and will hit almost full power load during boot. That rig will hit 250-300 W during the boot phase.

ok ok ok... so... if i were to power the heart of the rig with a 300w PSU, and the graphics card with a 350w PSU, would that work? or would that also end in tears?

which brand?

OK... i have in my spares, a 350W JeanTech PSU, a 300W ISO PSU, 2x 250W FSP Group PSU's and a 400W EZ Cool PSU. The EZ Cool PSU has been chugging along happily without any issues whatsoever for around 10 years. (note that the EZ Cool and one of the FSP Group PSU's have 20 pin motherboard connectors.) A couple are 80+ PSU's as well... i guess that is slightly reasuring.

If the motherboard has on board graphics then it should be fine without the 4890 plugged in.

This is a stopgap until you get a decent psu right? Just live without games for a while...read a book.

haha, dont worry i have this rig v v for playing games... Its just that the onboard graphics are so bad that i cant run windows aero and window animations lag horribly. It is just a bit of an inconvenience.

I would only be getting the 4890 because i know where i can get a 4890 and 4gb of xms2 with custom heatsinks for £60.

Scrap the custom heatsinks idea, and buy a PSU instead and use the stock fan.
