What would happen if you took away all of the cooling devices in a decent rig then played Crysis on highest settings? (If it ever made it that far)

its easily possible if u leave fan on gpu. for cpu you can have big good massive heat sink without a fan

edit: there is 5750 passive card so its possible

Yea, most systems these days have thermal protection/shutdown. If the CPU or whatever gets to a particularly hight temp the PC will just turn itself off to prevent damage. As others have said, this would probably be before it even boots if you removed the entire heatsink and such.

Not really any exciting "blow up" answer lol.

Well, once my exhaust fan wasnt working at full speed ( had error on startup about exhaust fan ) i couldnt be bothered switching off and on to fix, i just pulled it out my mobo then the pc just shut off. I wouldnt be surprised if you magically made the CPU cooler dissapear the pc would shut off.

Thermal protection video has been linked here a few times, go on you tube shows what happens. They have Heatsinks on CPUs whilst running a game that are not screwed on and just pick them up, some chips BURN

Old hardware would just blow up but these days they have thermal shutdown to prevent damages to the hardware.
