What would happened if you pulled the processor out while pc was on?

As title says, if you constructed some sort of system to pull a processor out from a motherboard while the system was powered on, what would happen? would there be a lot of sparks/smoke etc? or would it simply just power off but all the lights in the system stay on?

Not saying i will do it! just curious to know what will happen.

not sure why anybody would want to try it, but it would probably give a similar result as booting without a CPU.

Also btw why don't you use the marc512 account? it's not banned or anything

how would you get the cpu out with the heatsink on it ?

by the time you fiddle around taking the heatsink off the cpu will over heat and will shut down anyway.

i have a feeling this is theoretical, but yes, good point :)

As we're dealing with theoretical - you could attach the HS with thermal adhesive and keep pressure on the CPU with your hand. Once powered up - tug the HS up and the CPU will follow...

...and the computer will either turn off/beep (depending on age/MB) or go pop.

I like your curiousness. (i bet you have blown up a number of "things" previously. i know i have!!)

My guess is freeze with pic still on screen or BSOD. I don't think you will get a total shut down.

I aint trying this, but would genuinely be curious a to what will happen :-)

is the BSOD not at board level (have no idea how it works to be honest) / maybe it is stored in a chip somewhere......

getting more curious now... i do have an old P4 knocking around...... hmmm

The CPU would probably be very hot, thus burning your fingers and with the electrical current being severed with your hand so near to it would probably jump to the nearest conductive material, your hand thus giving you a fatal if not nasty shock to boot. Just theory but i certainly will not be testing it anytime soon.

Burning maybe... shock unlikely. (And fatal? doubt it). It takes A LOT of energy to bridge a gap.

You will fly to the moon, or just burn ur fingers and forget sucha silly idea came to ur head :D But it will just power down or blue screen

I suspect it would either remove without any major damage to either, bar the BIOS panicking a bit. Or if it wasn't removed quickly enough, you could get electricity arcs as the pins break contact, resulting in potential damage to either the socket or CPU itself.

Either way, not a great idea, breaking electrical contacts while the electrons are still flowing rarely goes well, unless the system is designed properly, such as a SATA or USB cable (i.e. earth connection is made before any live and vice versa when broken).

It will be like a unicorn jumping over a double rainbow and all your favourite musician collaborate on a song just for you while you bust a nut all over Megan Fox's face.
