What would I need to spend?

OK so I'm probably unusual around here - I love cars and driving but really don't like spending any more than I need to.

I've been through a higher than average number of cars, mostly to deal with change in circumstances but sometimes buying something more "interesting" and selling it later because I didn't feel it was worth the money. I won't go through them all but most recently I had a nearly new Peugeot 508 as a business tool (PCP funded by mileage claims). When the system at worked changed, I got out of the PCP and bought an Octavia VRS. As much as I enjoyed that, it annoyed me in several ways (lack of comfort/refinement mainly) - so I ended my short experiment with hot hatchery and bought an X Type Jag for a few grand in the meantime.

Nothing I've owned has ever scratched every itch and ticked every box - but now I have much more financial freedom than I used to. So, rather than a usual "spec me", I was wondering if people could make suggestions of what I might be able to start saving towards as something that should last for the long term. Obviously within reason - the car I've got is a few grand and saving/financing a few 10s of 1000s wouldn't be too hard. But like I said, I don't like spending more than I have to - so this is more "spec me a budget"! If it's not really good then I'd prefer to spend my money on other things like holidays.

What I like/need
- Comfort and refinement. I do appreciate the smoothness of engines with more than 4 cylinders. Ride quality over handling
- Not too big. Parking at home is on road, finding a space and not quite fitting is annoying. The length of the 508 was a bit too big.
- Decent performance - nothing mad but 60 in 6-7s is great. A good auto is preferred over a manual which is preferred over a crap auto
- Good levels of equipment, decent infotainment, other gadgets
- Well built. Not annoyingly unreliable
- Sensible fuel economy. In the 30s

What I don't like or care about
- Couldn't care less about image. Looks aren't a huge priority
- While I appreciate a 6 cylinder, I do believe a 4 can be refined *enough*
- Not fussed about handling overly although the AWD traction in the current car is nice
- Dislike bad value for money, I couldn't live with something compromised in other areas just because it has a desirable or cool badge
- Age and mileage don't bother me directly but obviously have an impact on other criteria (reliability, kit etc)

Now there are plenty cars out there that would tick these boxes, what I'm trying to figure out is whether the amount Id have to spend to get something I'd really enjoy owning would be worthwhile.

So what do you reckon - how much would you be working towards financially and what would you be desiring?

The 5 is always something I keep coming back to. Knowing that the e60 isn't well thought of and the f10 looks superb... The main issue I have is convincing myself that it's worth 10 times what I currently own. It would have to be something really special to be worth that amount to me, and that's something I won't know without owning one

Size is the only other thing, id prefer something 3 series size - but that's not insurmountable

My first thought was to aim for 10-15k on a C class but the running costs worry me a bit.

He wants something smaller than a 508...

I managed with the size of the 508 for nearly 2 years and it was never frustrating enough to be a huge problem. It's just annoying when there's a space right outside my door that's an inch shorter than the car.

But I guess if I'm looking for my perfect, no compromises, car so that I won't be inclined to change again a few months later I need to keep that criteria in there.

New Focus RS. Probably wont have the refinement your looking for though, but I can't imagine one of those losing too much value, regardless of how long you hold onto it.

Audi RS3 will have more refinement, but will lose more value over ownership term I would imagine. Or a Golf R (in estate form) will also have the refinement, but will lose more money again.

Of course, these are all cars that will cost proper money, £30k +.

The 5 series is absolutely a great car. And I'd recommend one all day long. But if size is a thing, they aint exactly small. You can get all the fancy surround view to assist with parking, but it wont make the space any bigger.

3 series is okay, but I keep being put of by the interior personally. But that is a relatively rare opinion apparently, held by myself and probably only Fox, doesn't seem to bother anyone else too much. But we are probably both spoiled by alrready owning the F10/F11 now.

The thing is, the BMW's do hit most of your requirements. And if you can find a x35i engined one, it could well be just the car for you. My earlier suggestions were all 4 cylinder (except the RS3 which is a 5 pot).

But they will lose less money over ownership I would think, with the Focus RS probably being the best at holding it's money (going by used Ford RS prices, low mileage original mk2 RS Focus' can go for anywhere from £13-20k+ and probably weren't too much more than that new). Then Audi RS prices usually stay pretty strong too, especially if you keep to RS3's and RS4's, RS6's not quite so much. Golf R's not so much admittedly, but still perform better than GTI's and the like.

He was annoyed with the refinement of an Octavia VRS, I highly doubt a Focus RS or Audi RS3 is any better.

Not sure a hot hatch is what iaind is after either.

Classic ocuk. He asks for something that isn't mad performance wise and implies a budget of around 15k.

Gets a recommendation of two brand new nutter hatches :p

Yeah definitely not aspiring to a hot hatch here. I wish Saab still made cars, it would make this a lot easier. Part of me wonders how mad it would be to spend 9-10k on a 9-3 Carlsson

Like I said, budget is what I'm trying to ascertain. If there's a 25k car out there that would keep me really happy and do everything I want perfectly then I'd get one. It's all about value for money though, the higher the price the harder it is to justify to myself!

That said, these seem to be like hens teeth but could be a good answer?

To be completely fair, I only suggested the "nutter hatches" as they will be among the best value for money due to the lower rate of depreciation.

Have a look at / a drive of some Lexus GS's

The ownership experience is apparently second to none for the kind of money we're talking about and I personally find the hybrids a pretty interesting proposition - interiors very well put together if you can get over the non German look

They absolutely do not drive as well as any BMW equivalent, but are very good all rounders second hand

So I dont know if anyone is still reading this, or sympathises with what I'm trying to do but sometimes it just helps to braindump thoughts :)

I'm thinking that going from a 2k car up to a "perfect" car at whatever price that costs (be it 15, 20k +) isnt a great idea, instead I should maybe make a few jumps en route which will help solidify what I'm trying to achieve.

So I set about looking to see how many boxes I could tick for 5-6k - with the intention of getting something early next year and then moving up to something more towards the 10k mark as a next "jump" when I fancy it. Clearly I need to be mindful of depreciation but an idea did spring to mind...... Alfa Romeo 159 2.4 JTDm

I know I said I don't care about looks, but it cant be denied that its a gorgeous car. Interior looks like a fine place to spend time and is more modern and well equipped than what I've got. 200bhp as standard should provide enough pace, 5 cylinder diesel should be a decent middle ground of refinement. Reliability on these is meant to be surprisingly un-Alfaish. 2007-8 Lusso models with sensible mileage and history are around the 5k mark. Any thoughts, or have I completely lost it?

At that value id go with a Volvo s80 personally. I still miss mine, never thought id say that!

But, it was super comfy, more reliable than anything else, cheap to run and relatively well kitted (nav is pants). The ride was excellent and it was a nice place to be.

That's where id go. I think I averaged 35mpg on the 2.5 turbo petrol which was revised in 2009 I think. Similar engine to the Focus ST/Mondeo but it came with some decent revisions to economy, response and emissions.

Great value now. Probably 5 to 7k or something.

Just get a 520d BMW. Good all round work type car, very economical, very comfortable. Good range of options and accessories, etc.

Job done?
