What would I need to use my Audiolab 8000S as an amp for my TV?

Hi All,

As per thread title really- I have an 8000S and 8000P connected to some JMLab 816S speakers, and wanting to use them as a 2.0 setup for the TV. I know the 8000S is a pretty flexible amp, but not sure what else I need.

Any kit suggestions?

Thanks

Assuming your TV's stereo and either has stereo phono outputs or a scart lead that can output stereo audio you'll just need either a set of standard phono audio cables or a scart to phono cable.

Run them from the TV to the stereo and hey presto!

Ok but if I want to go to a 5.1 setup using the JMs as front L/R, would I want to leave the Audiolab in the mix, as I assume I would need a 5.1 amp in there somewhere- would I just link the front L/R outs of a 5.1 amp to the Audiolab?

Thanks

I wouldn't route audio from the TV unless it's really necassary, you'll probably find the output stages quite lousy, usually with TV electronic buzz. I'd output sources analogue outputs to the 8000S. As for 5.1 you'd output left & right pre-outs from the av processor into a spare line input on the S as well. If you didn't have a P, then you could use the power amp in jacks so the S acts as a poweramp in av mode from the av processor outputs, but you can't do that since in bi-amping mode the S pre-outs are muted so the P won't receive the signal.

Had a 8000S also, now gone to a Q.

Looking online there's a 'power amp in' socket which i assume bypasses the audiolabs pre amp circuitry and goes just to the main amplification.

If this is the case then you could use a suitable 5.1/6.1/7.1 surround amp (with pre amp outputs) to feed the from two channels to the audiolab/JMLab combo.

I have a Yamaha DSP-AX1 for surround but use a Cyrus power amp for the front stereo amplification of the surround set up.

Works a treat and allows me to listen to music without compromising music listening.

Ah right, was writing mine when you posted yours! :p

Just use a standard input then as badbob says.

Quality won't be ideal but it certainly won't be terrible!

Ok so the quality will be poor, as there will be electrical noise through the lines to the amp? just to clarify would I be better off putting an AV amp between the 8000S and the TV?

Send all stereo only sources directly the 8000S line inputs (CD, tape, radio)
For all surround & AV sources send it to the av amp.

In a 5.1 system buy a av amp, av pre-amp processor and send L/R pre-outs from that to spare 8000S input, you'll need to set volume to around 12 o clock everytime so use a white sticker on the dial and fascia to line them up.

Only send video to the TV. I wouldn't send any audio to the TV, or just reduce volume on the TV to minimum. Why use naff TV speakers if you have a decent sound system?

K, so I would put an AV amp acting as a pre-amp in the way (TV->AV->8000S line in), even for a 2.0 setup... any suggestions for something I could pick up preferably S/H or for not too much cash that would do a decent job and allow me to utilise m5 channels if I wanted to?

Thanks

No you'd only need a av amp if you're going surround, for 2 channel just send audio from your sources to the 8000S line level inputs. ie DVD player, Sky etc.

A remote with macro function will help here, it'll do the input switching for you.

Ahh got you... Sorry for all the dumb questions, but we won't be having Sky (Utter waste of money IMO)- just going to use a DVD player and freeview. So I would go Freeview-> Audiolab and DVD-> Audiolab meaning I effectively use up 2 of the inputs on the 8000S?

For the time being if you tv has RCA outputs (red and white phono seockets), then connecting it to your amp should sound fine until you decide on something better.

I use my outputs from my Pio 5090 to my lyngdorf amo driving ATC speakers and it sound great. Only noticable problems are when the odd channel decides to have a spasm with its audio track, which is amplified by a good quality amp+speakers. Hollyoaks (yes I know ;)) has this sometimes.

I won't be upgrading this 2.0 setup for a long time, until I have money for a power amp and av processor and a decent speaker pakage + SVS cylinder sub. My 2.0 system is better than and 5.1 sony/pioneer/panasonic system, and sounds kick ass for music. But then again I have no space or effort devoted to getting an av amp and another set of speakers atm.

Enjoy the setup as is, music through the tv should sound pretty good, but for films a centre speaker would be helpful, but then again it involves more equipment, and what you have will work great atm.

ad you don't know what you're missing. But like you said getting the rest in similar quality is going to cost you..

SVS PC Ultra 13 subwoofer £1010
AV Processor £2K+
Center £800+
Rears £600+/ £1200+ for 2 pairs
3 or 5 channel power amp £1500+
Cabling £150

Ok decided I am going to build a MythBuntu box with:
  • M-Audio sound output (So should get decent sound quality out)
  • DVB TV card (Possibly dual for recording and playback together)
  • Optical drive for DVDs, etc
  • Also means I can play my MP3/ iTunes via the speakers (Although I am massively anal about quality so play CDs when really 'listening', but means I can get the 'party tracks' out on MP3 when no one really cares about SQ)

Giving me:

TV-> MythBuntu-> AudioLab

Should be decent :)

****** (means masturbator) :p:D

That will be the exact cost list of my 5.1 setup when I go for one. Rather than doing it by halfs, getting a cheapy onkyo and 5.1 quad lites (for example), building up with a full system installed with trunkated/underfloor/wall cables and a projector is going to be my way of doing it.

See you in 10 years when I have the pennies, house first in ~3-4 years, then a nice skyline GTR, then above sound system. Then some chocolates for the wife followed by some kids if Im feeling especially flush and have no more AV upgraditis :D

Lucky man bob, bet it sounds sublime !!!
