Hi
What do you think would be cheaper -
Car (well, insurance (will be 17 - so new driver) /tax etc really)
Or moving out. (Into a room or something, near to a town)

Cos I either want to be near a town (canterbury), or get a car so I can drive to town. (I know theres hardly any details above. But meh)

Ok how much do you earn, what is your finiacial situation, what sort of place are you lookin at and what sort of car.

KaHn

It would have been accurate to say "what do both of these involve..."

1) Car. Depends on how you intend to buy and which car to get. Assuming you have 0 no claims and are a new driver you are looking at £1.5k minimum to get a **** heap insured and running for a year. This wouldn't neccesarily be a one-off payment as insurance can be achieved in installments.

2) Moving out. I'll assume you mean renting... perhaps the 'cheapest' option would be to cohabit a house with flat-mates and this can be achieved from about £300pcm in greater london if shared between 3. This doesn't include council tax, bills etc...

Depends on what way you get your money, whether you work full or part time and various other factors

Get a bike. Cheaper running costs and less time spent waiting in traffic = more cash in pocket and more free time. And home is the cheapest place you'll ever live. Win-win situation really :)

He's right... or try a moped if you want more 'beef' - these also cut out the traffic frustration...

I has this little dilemma a few eeks ago.

I worked out that moving out would be more expensive, cost of rent, then food and what not.

So, i have gone for the car option.

Hehe - I was referring to the motorised variety there dude. :)

see below ;)

It probably depends on why you want to stay in town/be able to drive in easily. If it's to go out drinking, then you're by far cheaper living at home and driving ;).
To be living away from home you will be paying for: rent, gas/electricity, food, water, council tax, tv licence, internet, and general supermarket purchases (shampoo, toothpaste, light bulbs etc). It all adds up :(.
To run a car, insurance shouldn't be as much as £1.5k, I'm sure I had quotes closer to £1k when I was 17. If you buy an older car, it will be cheaper, but you will probably have to pay out more for repairs at service/MOT time. Fuel is expensive too. Take a rough average of 10p/mile if you know how many miles you expect to do per month.

Is it possible for you to share a car with one of your parents at all? ie, if you only want it at night after they get home from work? I did that for a couple of years and it worked well.

This should be obvious really. What you spend on a car and insureance will give you a room for around 6 months. Choice is yours :)
