I've been going through the motions in my mind to finally get rid of my Rover 25. It's so poor I'll probably scrap it as I doubt even a Rover enthusiast would want to restore it.

I'd like a 5 door hatchback, petrol or petrol/hybrid and something that is reasonable to insure. I've always thought to get a Ford Focus when the time come but when I'm out and I see a car and think oh that's nice, whats that? and it's a Seat Leon or a BMW 1 Series. I quite fancy the BMW 1 Series atm.

Cheers.

Wow, didn't realise Legnum's were still holding that much value - that's saddening, wouldn't have minded one of those at all!

Don't go near cheap AMGs. They might look tempting, but they will break and the bill will be far more than the car is worth! They are lemons basically.

£5k 1 Series is rubbish.

Don't a lot of lesser petrol BMW's like the 116,118,120, 318,320 etc suffer with loads of silly issues like injectors etc? I know any car has problems if u read up on it but the baby Bmw forum for the 1 series is shocking at how many threads there are of unhappy owners with problem after problem that can't be rectified.
Op I would just go with the sensible option and get a 2011 mk3 Focus!

There's plenty that can be had for around 5k private. I know I've been looking at buying one for the last few months

Autotrader didn't have any when I checked a second ago, but appreciate what it did have were all reasonably average mile examples - nothing high for example.

£5k? I'd continue my illusive search for an e38 740i that's not wrecked.

Not exactly what your after op, I grant you! :D

Focus, Civic, (2010ish on) mazda 3 etc

1 series is a waste of time at £5k- Mk6 Golf with the little 1.4t (assuming you can just about get into one for the money) if you really want something German

Whilst this is true to a degree, remember forums are rarely full of people posting that they've had few if any problems, yes, a lot do have problems but I'd wager the majority actually don't.

They may also already have the common problem(s) and been fixed (for the first time at least) due to their age.

To be honest though, most of the other cars from less "premium" manufacturers are fundamentally better cars than an old 1 series with a low power output. They'll be newer and possibly a whole generstion of car further on, more reliable if picked well, almost every single one will be bigger with a better boot, be easier to find with a better spec etc.
