Finally decided on a Core i5 spec. The total cost is about £1000. What would you change about this? Will it all go quite well together? Anything I should wait for or swap etc...

With putting a 5850 in there you might want to up to a larger case like the antec 1200, haf932 or thermaltake spedo.

Got to agree there seen a couple of people so far moaning about the size of the gpu and not fitting in the case. From what I can glean they are longer than the width of a standard atx mobo.

I think a 5850 will fit in an Antec 902, that card is shorter than a 5870. Gotta confirm that though.

Hmm, that PSU isn't modular though. :(

The DVD drive, why is it better? :)

The Spotcool fan... well, just to help make sure it stays cool? Might put it over the RAM.

Nope, the PSU I linked to isn't modular, but it's far higher quality. If you want a great modular PSU, then I suggest looking at this.

the dvd drive is chose has a higher maximum speed, has lightscribe and gets a good write up here. Considering it costs the same as the LG I think it's worth getting.

You won't need the spotcool in that case, the RAM will be perfectly fine without it (unless you plan to overclock it to the extreme).

Edit: As for size of case, this review says the 5850 is 9.5 inches - so should be fine in the 902 case.

I would change:

PSU to this.
DVD drive to this.
GPU is great, but personally i'd wait for the ASUS 5850 (mainly for the voltage tweak tech).

Why the Antec Spotcool?

Agreed on all counts. The OCZ isn't a bad PSU but I'm tempted to think that the Corsair is better. I can vouch that the Sony optical drives are very good.

I wouldn't bother with the SpotCool. That's just going to be noisy for the amount of air it shifts. Better to get the airflow from your case fans right - then things will stay cool without having to resort to tiny fans like that.

Here is a graph from this 5850 review on The Tech Report, they are using an i7/X58 @3.2Ghz test system.

Do not hotlink images please.

The 5850 seems to be a really power efficient card so massive PSUs are not required. Anyway, the PSU recommendations by ATI and Nvidia are usually on the conservative side to account for bargain bin PSUs you find in a lot of systems and to cover their bases.

i was almost sold on the antec signature until i spotted it only has 2x 6 pin power cables for graphics cards.

With the new 5870s requiring 2 per card, the crossfire dream is dead
