Hi all,

right basically my Dad is seriously thinking about emmigrating.

He hasn't mention anything to mum yet and is going to have talks with her soon about it all.

I've spoken with him about it and he said he would buy a nice place in Australia and sell our current house and buy a small place here in England.

And then himself Mum and brother would move out there and me and my sister would have our own say in it and it would be upto us if we wanted to go out there with him or stay here etc.

Now I'm not really sure what I would do.

My trade is computers, and have a promising career ahead of me with work in London. For which I'm on a nice wage and get to enjoy the a lot of nice things etc.

But if say my parents were to move out to Australia just for the idea of living in a better weathered country with equal possibilities appeals to me a lot.

So what would you do if you were in my position.

Currently I'm 18 with a promising career in IT for a big insurance underwriters in London or move out to Australia with rest of the family to see what new opportunities I are there and start my career there.

Many Thanks :)

stay here for a bit, see if they like it 100% and settle out there. if they do then maybe move out to be with them or take extended holidays there to see if you like it too.

they are pretty strict on who they let in, but computers should be ok. i am going into that field and am considering moving out there at some point too. either way i'd stay here for a bit as moving out there, finding out you dont like it then having to move back would be a lot of hassle.

That sounds like a good idea :) thanks for the advice :)

It's ok, they have computers in Australia :).

If your parents are going to help you out with the move then I say go for it. See what else the world has to offer. If you're not happy, you can always come back.

Well I know my sister won't go because she has a horse and the horse comes first lol.

Dad said that he wouldn't leave us completely on our own if he moved out there and we stayed here. I'm not sure what he would and what he wouldn't pay for.

So I'd like to try say for 6 months out there and see how I find it but I wouldn't want to lose my job here in London. Thats where the problem lies.

Have you been to Austrlia before?

If not, I would go out to Australia for a few long holidays then decide. You can't really think about emigrating to a country that you haven't been to before.

Nope never been. But Dad has and he loves it there.

My personal opinion :

You're young, you're single, and you have the backup of parents in Aus and a place/job in the UK. Hell, even your new car has the steering wheel on the correct side for both.
You're not packing WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?

lol Mickey, you do make me laugh on these forums :p

Why am I not jumping to go?

I have my job, my friends, my LIFE in England...

I like I said, I like the idea of going but I don't want to quit my job and go there for 6 months, not like it, come back and not be able to find a job again etc.

Catch my drift?

EDIT: /Me wonders if I could continue my current job in Oz

Job - you've gotten one, you can get another.

Ok Fair point. I'll give you that one

Friends - I've had so many friends in my life that I couldn't find now if I tried. There are very few people not blood related to you that would even try to keep in touch if you moved over there. The rest aren't friends, they're drinking buddies. They're a dime a dozen and can be found/replaced in a heartbeat. True friends wouldn't hold you back from an opportunity like this. They'd be stabbing you in the back to take it from you!! :p (j/k)

Well If I do move there I can think of about 10 people that WILL keep in contact as I would to them.

LIFE - it's what you make of it. It can either be confined to a tiny little point on this great big globe, or it can be spread all over the place and enjoyed to its fullest. Your choice.

See now I've always wanted to go traveling the world is amazing and theres so much to see and imo so under appreciated etc.

I know what mine would be in your shoes. And it wouldn't leave much time for making a reply to this post between stuffing travel bags......

Mickey my man your getting carried away mate :p it hasn't even been discussed yet, and will probably be discussed within the next few weeks so nothing is definite yet it might not even happen.

Thats why I'm not packing :p

I'm pushing 40 now

Just wanted to quote this bit to call you an old git really :p

I'll be the first to admit I'm getting on in years.

Was only messing around mate :) I do appreciate the advice given :).

I'll also point out that I'd drop everything like a bad habit if I could to do what you've been offered.

See the idea is there but nothing is definite yet.

But rest assured I'll keep you all updated.

Think about it, your dad's probably got a LOT more serious ties to the area than you do, and he's considering it.

Hrm? Tell you something? :)

Only one I can think of is his best mate moved out there 13 years ago.

But thats the only tie thing I can think of....

Read through a lot of these replys, I'm at work at the minute and will reply to them all at lunch time :p

Been there, seen it, done it and don't regret moving to Australia one bit.

I presume your dad wants to go for a permanent visa. These are not easy to get and it also costs a fair bit of money, which is why if you get a chance like this to get permanent residency of Australia by going with your dad just now, then go for it. After a period of time in the country you can apply for citizenship, which will give you both a UK and Australian passport, allowing you to live and work in either country as and when you please.

If you want to do it when you are older it will cost you and you may not be successful, depending on what skills are required in the country at that time. You will need to pay for a skills assessment, pay for medicals and pay for the visa, which ain't cheap.

The grass is not always greener, however as I'm typing this I'm looking outside, there is not a cloud in the sky, a couple of parrots are sitting in my apricot tree and my pool is looking very inviting. You still need to pay bills and put up with all the normal things here, however it does seem to be a lot easier and less stressful when you are in Australia.

thanks for the info :) - So how long have you been living there? how old were you when you first went there?

Is the country cheaper than the UK?

Thanks :)

Damn right!

A few years ago, i was faced with the same decision whether to go to Oz, not for emigration, but on a 12 month visa. I went! and had the time of my life.

The one thing i can tell you, if you think about it too much you will talk yourself out of it. You will always find a reason not to go.

My advice is, take a year out there and check it out :)

So after the 12 months what did you do? are you still there? or did you come back to Sunny England?

Think if you go there to live you must have a work emplacement or education emplacement.

Ah

Now this is my first problem.

I don't have any qualifications my trade is from 3 years of experience and several hours of web browsing :p

BTW if you come down here you will be able to pick up V6s and V8 Comodores and Falcons starting from $500 AUD to $70,000 AUD and be able to get them insured easyer then it is to pick a booger from your nose :p

That just whisked away any ideas of shipping the Saab over :p

I visited Indonesia, Hawaii and LA before returning to England.

Now i have commitments i'm afraid, but i still go to Oz for a months hol every year (keeps me going), just got back in fact. Maybe i'll emigrate there myself in later life :)

As 6thElement says: "You only live once and it's a big wide World out there to discover".

What you waiting for!!

Really does sound like an awesome place.

I think what I will do is let my parents go out there for 4 months to see how they are getting on etc. and then go out myself for a trial. Providing that they are doing ok and aren't coming back to England anytime soon.

Well...

Dad spoke to Mum about it last night and he said she is "thinking about it"

Now if she was going to say No she would have done it already.

I'll update the thread when I know more...

The site I used was www.seek.com.au. There is a lot of contract work available as well as full time positions. When I first arrived I was going to go down the contract route to start with but ended up with a full time position within 2 months of arriving.

The country is booming and along with that there is rapid growth in the IT sector. There is a real shortage of local skills in various fields. In my office there is a wide range of nationalities including Chinese, Croation, Swedish and Sri Lankan. The uni's here are churning out IT graduates but there does not seem to be enough to meet the need.

Within 3 months of starting my job, I was on an interview panel for a graduate position. Three people were put forward for it by recruitment agencies and two got jobs. Not bad odds if you were one of the three.

Edit: Thought you might be interested in last years Australia Day lamb advert that was shown on the TV here, very amusing and sums the country up quite well I thought.

That's good to know.

Thanks for the info :) - Going to bookmark that site as well
