My current car Audi A4 57 reg has decided to blow up - known issue with the hex shaft and is going to cost me anywhere between £1500 and £2K if the oil pump has gone as well.At the present moment I dont have the 2k so thought why not repair it then trade it in and get a cheap run around- I work as a field engineer and travel from site to site and bring back IT equipment etc.

My thoughts are get a say £750 ish Mondeo and just run it I will pay off the cost of repairs and have enough money to pay for the car+ insurance and a few quid for anything that might need attention.At the moment I am using my car as I need to be able to get out and about. She however is not impressed with this as I was going to get a new car in a years time and she thinks that "what with my history of cars" in that I have a knack of breaking them she thinks it would be wiser to get a newer car @ 11K something like a Focus -- this means however that I will have to extend an existing loan to cover the extra cost.

As we are both at loggerheads - I can see it from her point if the car breaks down I will need to use hers and this causes her problems getting to and from work, however from my point of view am I any better off by going for a newer model? Therefore I am asking for your views - Annual mileage will be around the 15K mark so petrol will be the order of the day.

Just had the garage on it will cost me £3100 to fix as the pump has gone in that the hex shaft wont fit in due to it being worn - apparently these costs £1100 new - although they are trying to source a re conditioned one either way its going to cost, what with the turbo and other bits and pieces £2500 inc vat and labour the car is subjectively worth anything between 3800 and 4800

But it depends on who you are selling to and what they are willing to offer, either way I will have to pay for the repair on my CC and then take it from there which doesnt leave much spare capital at best it will be £1600 and I will definitely be moving it on and advised the garage of this - (not to take shortcuts make it right but not at a no expense policy)

One thing if I get a new car now and have the Audi fixed and the insurance for it is not renewed (end of May) as long as I have a valid tax disc can I still park it on a public road or do I have to make it SORN?
