What would you do? TV or new PC?

Plasmas are better than LCD for just about any use. The only reason folk bought LCDs instead of plasmas was LCDs were much cheaper... you could get LCD's for a few hundred, when Plasmas were the wrong side of a grand. Now though, you can get excellent plasma sets for less than £500 and are more than comparable in price to equivalent LCDs. No exuse not to get a plasma these days.
fanboy? pros and cons for both:

Plasma - good blacks (contrast)
LCD - no burn in - less power to run

You pays your money.....

If you're primary reason for getting a decent plasma was to play PS3 games on, then you would be a fool to go down that road. Console gaming will always play catch-up to PC gaming, from the game mechanics to the graphics.

Console graphics are horrid compared to those on a PC, I know as I've done direct comparisons with a 360, PS3 and my PC.

If you're likely to spend more time in front of the TV than your PC, then obviously get the plasma, but to be perfectly honest with you I think it seems a bit of a waste - what benefits would you get from a new plasma than your current TV? Some "HD"TV (over-hyped ********), some "HD" console gaming (completely pointless as the graphics are shocking), and that's about it. Whereas your current computer couldn't even be compared to a new PC, they're in completely different leagues.

My vote: PC :)

If you get the plasma, you could pass it off that you got it because you think your other half deserves it. She will be all happy and enjoy watching awful soaps on it.

If you point it out in the right way you could end up with a nicer budget for your pc when the time comes around as she will still be thinking of that expensive tv you got for her. :D

I appreciate the comments - not as one-sided as I'd expected either :).

I've already flogged to death, at least to my own satisfaction, plasma vs LCD, and I think at 42", for movies and games, you cant really beat the recent panasonic plasmas for picture quality at that price. I think only the very best LCDs with LED backlights and local dimming etc are catching up to plasmas, and they are big money. At calibrated settings the difference in power consumption is less than, well, a 480 vs a 5870 :)

I'm a fairly casual gamer nowadays, so maybe I'd get more out of the TV due to its other uses. But then I'm casual on the consoles too and don't really watch any TV. But GT5 will be essential! Then again I like having a decent PC and love my FPS's, and absolutely cannot get along with them without keyboard/mouse. Picked up FC2 cheap for the PS3 but soon put it down as playing with the pad was horrible.

Interesting point to consider scoring points with the Mrs and general psychological manipulation of her for my own wicked purposes :). Actually I think she'd prefer the PC! She doesn't care much for TV either and I could probably run a 24 or even 27" monitor past her as great for photo editing!:)

Decisions decisions. Still coming down on the PC side. Thanks for your time guys.

i got a nice pc, then got a nice tv (46" samsung led 6 series) to go with xbox 360/wii.

Wii looks god aweful on it due to low res, xbox looks sweet, but since i refuse to play fps on console, and i stream video on my pc, and i watch movies on my pc.....i get little use out of my tv :(

it does look awesome though, and makes me want a similar screen for my pc.

News just in: Apparently we have won a £1000 pre-paid credit card from this McDonalds Monopoly thing going on. Hmmm well I'll believe that when I see it, but if it turns out to be legit, that just might sort the telly if I can put up a good case for it!

Well we'll see. In the meantime thanks for the comments - some good points to consider. Cheers,

Sigh - still only 94 posts :(. I'll never get into the MM

I bought a good Panasonic 37" Plasma last year when the retailers were panicking so was nice and cheap. It's really good for tv, movies and console gaming.

PC gaming seems to require much higher resolution, and much sharper colours than the Plasma can deliver - so it's fairly awful.
