I posted earlier last week asking about a spec i was thinking of building. Now ive got a decision to make... I have 4 gigs of ram @ 533 in my old computer. I can either:

1. Take two gigs out of that and buy another two gigs of ram @533 for the new build

Or

2. Leave the 4 gigs in the computer and buy 2 gigs of ram @800 or 677 for the new spec

Im not too sure on what to do, as if i go for option 1 i have been told that i will not be able to overclock as i will be getting a q6600 in July. But if i do go for option 1 it will be cheaper and i get 4 gigs of rem instead of 2.

However, if i go for option 2 i will be able to overclock, its faster ram etc. But it will be more expensive (id prefer not to spend the extra but will if its definatly worth it...) and i will have 2 gigs instead of 4.

Would you choose the 4 gig @533 over the 2 gig @800/677??

If so are the benefits of faster ram very noticable?

Is it true that i will not be able to overclock with the 4 gigs@533 and the Q6600?

Is the extra money worth the better ram? (but less of it)

Also, can i use any ddr2 mobo with any ddr2 ram? or do some motherboards not support ram @533?

By the way, yes i am new to overclocking, have been interested in it for a while... (who isnt... better performance for free!!!!)... So sorry if these questions are stupid! lol

Thanks

4GB is better if you need the RAM, sorry - but its honestly that simple. Having said that, you'd be better off with a 64-bit o/s if you really, really, need the memory. Otherwise, all other things being equal, faster 2GB would probably suit you better. hth. :)

Only 2 gigs of the ram are from dell, the other two are from crucial. I wil be taking those ones for the new system. I will be getting a 64bit o/s.

The system will be used for gaming mostly...

thanks

With the budget you stated the original thread you could just buy a 4gb kit (2x2gb) and be done with it.

Well... not anymore, budget had to be cut by 100 or 200. Going past 1000 is pushing it unfortunately. And im keen on getting a 2900xt for some reason!!! lol

You can't have everything....

Chances are by the time you upgrade it will be cheaper anyway....
