Depends what you mean by tinker? What do you mainly do with the system? games, encoding etc...?

Have you overclocked your system? As that's where I'd start. Not 100% in the loop with intels but i'm sure that cpu will do 3.0ghz+?
sure others would be able to give a better opinion.

Nothing wrong with that system at all. No reason to get a new graphics card yet unless your games are running slow? I would personally upgrade to 4GB of ram especially as your running a 64bit version of vista. I would also get another monitor as I cant live without dual screens but if thats no interest to you I would save your money for a worth while upgrade.

oh yeah that is 4gb of RAM (should say X2, will edit), i use it for mainly gaming and a bit of video editing/encoding. It is overclocked to 3.2 can get it much higher but its nice and stable as it is

Thanks

add another 2GB of RAM since its so cheap.

a second GTS will be pointless unless you plan to sell the one you have and replace it with a 512Mb one, as your MB cant do sli anyways.

depending on what cooler you have, maybe get a new cpu cooler or maybe even venture into watercooling?

You might benefit from a faster hard drive - perhaps a 640GB WD if you search these forums for benchmarks you will see they are rather quick.

If your not bothered about that then...save your money
