In my current job I think both times I have been off sick for a few days I turned up at work feeling like death, once because my boss wasn't in (needed to cover) and the other because I thought I could make it.
Both times after being in work for around 30 minutes and coughing up a lung I got told to do one home as they didn't want me spreading it around to people.
They say just call in if you aren't well but I feel bad when I ring up to "call in sick" EVEN WHEN I'M SICK!! Damned honest work ethic...
I'd rather them know I am genuinely ill anyway, although they don't like it when you come in on the verge of death due to risk of spread.
OP if you had to ask in the end then they obviously weren't paying attention to you or didn't notice how bad you really were. At least you turned in and then asked. I'm sure it won't harm your record at your new job.
