Hey all,

I have a dead 7870 that I am returning today. When I get my replacement, I am thinking of selling it new for £170 and getting a 7970 for 140 extra. Does this seem like a good idea to you?

Ive read many times where people say get the 7950 over the 7970, is this also the same reasoning for getting the 670 over the 680 where the increase in price doesn't match up to the increase in performance? Recently purchased a 670 myself and compared to my friends 680 in 3d mark11 theres only a 600pts difference in scores (bot overclocked) yet he paid in the regions of £400+.

Unless you're benchmarking or simply have to have the best then 7950/670 is usually the logical choice.

Thankfully I dont fall into wanting the best . . . . mostly because my wallet won't let me but yeah the 7950 seems like the best choice. Would've went that route with my recent gpu upgrade but seen the msi 670 PE for £230 in the b* grade clearence, couldn't resist.

If money is an issue or you aren't particularly flush go for the 7950, otherwise 7970.

The fact that many 7970 are now voltage locked and 7950 ain't pretty much minimise whatever 7970 extra stream processors (or whatever people prefer to call it) has to offer on performance advantage, as it is probably easier to overclock the 7950 to higher clock than the 7970...for example the voltage locked 7970 hit the wall at 1100MHz, but the non-voltage locked 7950 can probably hit 1150-1200MHz with some bump to the voltage. Because of this, it is not worth paying over £60 premium for the tinny extra speed (if any at all).

Or you could get the new 7870 which is the Tahiti LE version. Its beating the 670 in some games and its sub £200
I got nothing against the LE, but game benchmarks have show that it is far more closer to 7870 side than the 7950 side when it comes to performance. In some games, the LE is almost no faster than the 7870.

Unless you can find one for as low as £160 then yea...if not, it's probably worth stretch to a 7950.

MSI 7970 OC from ocuk isnt voltage locked btw, some other 7970s aren't either. Not sure what they are off the top of my head though.
