Hi im having the standard decision making problems, towards either upgrading my current system or selling up and getting a new build.

I want to play BF4 and BF3 in full settings, I already have a decent 120hz samsung monitor.

I have won a prize of my choice at work and so decided to get a £300 voucher for OC

my current setup is

990fx mobo
850w power
8 gig 1600 mhz ram
1 tb hdd
radeon 6950 2 gig
phenom 2 3.7
water cooled case (armour LCS)

The question is do i just upgrade the GFX and get SSD ?? whilst overclocking and getting faster ram ???

say a 7970 or gtx 770

That option is most cost effective. the other is i sell up and go new build but would i see a huge benefit ?? and id have to fork out lots of extra cash.

Thanks

This should be in "General Hardware" section.

Don't worry about better ram.. 1600mhz is still the standard. Best upgrade for gaming would be better graphics card. SSD is always nice even a small one for the boot drive will make the system snappier and boot much faster.

What make mobo is that Asus? I'm sure the CPU is adequate but also could be a possible upgrade as 990FX is AM3+ socket and there's quite a few newer CPU out. I would first to the gfx card upgrade and see how the system performs first... if required upgrade the CPU.

Thanks guys I shall move this thread to the general Hardware section. Yea the mobo is a sabertooth 990 fx. Is PCIexpress 3 readily available yet ?? if so would it be worth the upgrade on the mobo too ??

Current graphics cards are PCI-e 3 so yes. That Sabertooth mobo still seems very good to me i wouldn't change it yet. I would still upgrade the GFX card and get an SSD... If the CPU is bottlenecking because of it.. could overclock more or upgrade the CPU later. Can you see what the CPU usage % when playing BF3?

Seems like good advice, thank you. I think im going to go for a new card, SSD and oc CPU, then upgrade it when cash flow allows. I cannot see cpu load in game atm as im not with pc but can post later.

Im not that £200 offer for that card is still on,

If not which card would you go for ??? lets assume i have £500 to spend

The Phenom II x4 980? If so that'll have no problems with BF3 at max. Maybe when BF4 comes out you might have to get an 8320 for higher settings.

Because your pc has less work to do the game play is a lot smoother if you play on medium.

I can run it on high but prefer to play it on medium. Folks where talking about it on the BF3 thread on the pc games board.

It's because your system can't cope running it at high, not because high is always slower.
