What Would You Do?

Perfect, thanks for your help. I dont particularly want to spend a lot so I will now change my mind and go the 290x + Q9650 + 4Gb ram route and begin saving a set amount each month to contribute to a beast rig in a couple of years.

thankyou all for advice and help,

Nick

Well spending now on the Q9650 then upgrading again later will just result in spending more. But yeah time to stop complicating things haha hopefully that upgrade will do the job :)

Well reality is he will spend £65 on new cpu and ram, then sell his 5870 for £40-£50 and the dual core cpu for I don't know £10 and he's got his money back and a new GPU to boot that will end up on a future new system.

He can only try that setup and see if he's happy with it and wait it out for a new setup, he may find he's perfectly happy with it and just wait till the price of the new cpu and ram (ddr4) tech comes right down in price over that time.

Looks like sourcing 8GB DDR2 might be trickey (I currently have all slots filled with 1GB modules and the auction site RAM was AMD chipset only :/)

800 mhz Geil. 4 x 1GB.

Looking like 2x2GB modules are coming out around £25 a pop. So could get 1 and mix for 6GB or two at around £50 for 8GB ugh.!

Seems a bit expensive for ddr2 :p I'd be aiming for under £20

Does your motherboard support 2x 4GB? I done a Google search and some sticks for £20 on fleabay..

Honestly I'm not sure. . . only fleabay I can find states its AMD chip only in description and comes from the other side of the world. Will look again... lots of BUFFERED SERVER memory :/

Personally I would NOT be chasing second hand Q9550 and DDR2 for an old PC.

Quite simply, 8gb of DDR2 second hand is around the same price as 8gb of superior DDR3.

A Q9550 is only a bit better than what you have if you use 4 cores, my E8500 overclocked was a better gaming experience on most games in comparison to the Q9550, both player World Of Tanks, Planetside 2, Bioshock Infinite, Crysis 3, BF3 etc.

I had planned on using my Q9550 system until the end of the year, but an unfortunate accident ruined my motherboard. It would have done fine until Skylake was released.

But I ended up going Z97. Skylake will offer around 15% more performance some sites claim. But a Skylake system is going to cost more than 15% above what is currently chosen, you could argue that it will be very likely not a cost effective upgrade for anyone on Z87/Z97, because as we have seen, the two generations before those have had no reason to upgrade.

As such I have no issues with recommending you just going Z97 now, and would say a Haswell i5 with a Z97 motherboard and 8GB of DDR3 and a 290X GPU will be a great upgrade, which will do you until DDR4 prices drop and we see improvements on Skylake.

Current prices are not going to fluctuate much,

So I want to upgrade the below:

Corsair 650W PSU,
Solid State 250GB Hard drive and 1tb storage drive,
ATI 5870
CPU Core 2 Duo E6420 overlcocked to about 3.5ghz (4gb ram)
RAM 4GB DDR2

For The Witcher 3 mainly, CPU motherboard and RAM and CPU Cooler are the 3 main upgrades first but do I wait for Skylake? is this release date set or is it rumoured June/July?? (or have I invented that?)

Basically should I hold off for Skylake and potential new ATI cards and playing Witcher 3 or just bite the bullet and upgrade now to i5 4670K/8GB RAM.

Budget is 300-400 for cpu/mobo/ram.

If its worth waiting a month or two then I might do that.

Thanks For help/advice.

I just upgraded from an almost identical spec for the very same reason :)

Went for an i5 4790k bundle - £279 and 8GB 2400MHz RAM - £50. For a total of £329

I also sourced a second hand GPU from the MM and bought a HD7950 to replace my aging Hd5770.

All in all that took me to £400

Get posting and get yourself on the members market. Q9550 went for £20 other day, also ddr2 is a lot cheaper on the MM. I will try look online for some ddr2 prices for you. The prices you found are silly for ddr2.

Hi all,

sad to hear how cheap things are on MM, I wont be getting on there anytime soon, even if I posted 5 times a day, its about 4 months.

I sourced 8GB (4X2GB) for £34 delivered. Should sell my 4GB for £10-15 so £19 total on RAM.

Next is a Q9550 whcih are going for around £60 on fleabay. Would love one for £20 but not going to happen. Might fetch a tenner for my CPU if I'm lucky.

I bought one of the pre order X290 so thats in the bag. If this 8GB and Q9550 cuts the mustard for Witcher 3 medium>high then I'm laughing. If not then I'll buy a 4690k.

Thanks again for input, I will keep you updated. Currently running Witcher 2 again which is on low settings, so looking forward to bumping that up with the new bits next week :)
