What would you go for..?

Out of those, i'd have the R32, the S3 loses the R32's performance, it just doesn't feel as fast as the VW, however, again, i'd save the cash and get an A3 2.0 TFSi over the S3 and pay the £300 to get the S3 performance (265bhp, 0-62 in 5.8ish), it still won't be as involving as the R32, but it won't be a slouch either.

I'll find out after the test drives hopefully.

Got any details on the performance upgrade for the A3?

Are they still selling to Golf GTI pirelli? Middle ground between the standard GTI and the R32, with the main advantage being the improved styling over the GTI.

My sister has a new S3 in black with all the extra trimmings. Looks awesome and rides just as well. Compared with the R32 I just feel like you are getting more for your money. That said, as others have mentioned I wouldnt spend that much on this type of car :)

They do, it's on their website. It also caught my eye. Can't find any decent pictures of it though.

Thanks for the link wez130.

It'd probably be the S3 for me, with the 130i following very closely behind.

A lot of people in this thread have said things like 'you can buy an m3, 911' etc but you've got to realise some people don't want that. Some people don't want older or second hand cars or big cars. If he wants to buy a hatchback for 25k then fair enough, i wouldn't but that's not the point. Someone has to buy them afterall.

My friend just bought a brand new 118d. Cost him 20k, it doesn't even have leather seats or anything that seems worth 20k to me. Fair enough it's a brand new car but no amount of me telling him he can buy an older better car was going to change his (or should i say his dads wallet) mind.

That said the golf doesn't seem worth the money, i would hate to spend that much and have people think i didn't spend a 1/10th of it. As much as i want to believe image isn't an issue in cars it definitely is, otherwise people would actually buy what they like rather than what they like to be seen in

Have you actually test drove or even been a passenger in either model?

The S3 is superior to the R32 in everything, which is why there is no real competition between the two instead it is more of A3 3.2 V6 vs R32. The R32 is much less involving and slower, no way in the same league.

I don't know who told you £300 would get S3 performance out of a 2.0TFSI, that is completly false. They may use the same size engine but the S3 is much more powerful, especially since S3 owners have been reporting 20-30+ more bhp than what audi claim.

As for the 265bhp, no worthy remap company offers that gain so I wouldn't go trusting that figure.

A +1 from me for the S3 as it is now in S-tronic, if you went for the pre facelift they are doing some great bargains (manual only though).

*edit* The 135i has some amazing tuning ability, I've seen it embarass a lambo!

i stand corrected, it's the 3.2 A3 which was compared to the R32, but EVO mag tested both and said that the A3 was much less involving than the R32

A lot of the tuning companies offer upwards of 250bhp from a remap, i got recommended to 'celtic tuning' for my own 2.0 TFSi from a friend who has dealt with them before, i intend on going to them myself.

You're a lazy quoter.

Of course it is, the R32 is the better model than the 3.2 A3 for handling.

By "a lot", who?

Reputable companies offer the following:

Bluefin: 41 bhp
Amdtechnik: 45-55bhp
Revo: 55bhp

I find it hard to believe a remap only of that amount would be good for the car, especially if it is DSG. Also the fact the 0-60 will be nowhere near 5.8.

Even a 320bhp edition 30 just about reaches 5.8, and that has many modifications based on the same 2.0T engine.

and you think remapping an A3 to 265 is impossible?

You can get as much bhp as you like - question is whether or not it will work. Try the celtic remap and see if you get a 5.8 second 0-60 and a healthy car life with no other mods.

The downside to the Pirelli is it is over priced and nothing special over the Edition 30. Plus the fact it has a marmite interior, which I personally love. There is the new shapes out soon, however the new shape S3 is already out which would make it a better buy.

even the wrc car doesn't have chavtastic bonnet vents etc

What are those black things.......flaps? You obviously do not know what you are talking about.

I think you will find that they are vents not designed to look pretty but with a job in hand?!? whereas the RS is designed to sell in showrooms which it will :)
