I feel my PC is getting a bit sluggish. But I don't know which part to upgrade. I have about £150 to spend + more if I sell old part.

Spec currently:
8800GTS 320mb
E6600 2.4ghz
2GB Crucial Ballistix pc-5300
350gb seagate hdd
corsair 520w power supply
gigabyte p35-ds3r

I was thinking of selling the E6600, and getting a quad or maybe upgrading the ram. What are your thoughts?

What OS are you using? If Vista 64 then i would sell the GTS (320) and get a new GTS and another 2gb of ram.

Have you overclocked at all? If not then I would seriously consider doing so. That cpu should go a fair way past 3ghz+ but you might run into problems with that RAM. 6400's or 8500's will suffice. Those 320MB cards are the old series' gts' so you could look into a new 512, although someone might want to chip in about performance gains....?

Hi Linken

I would hold out and save the money: The new 45nm chips (wolfdale/ yorkfield) will be arriving shortly. In Feb the new 9 series NV cards are released as well, including the ATI just before.

When you say your machine is sluggish is that running applications or just in games out of interest

Slugish? You having a canibis trip or something ?????

No chance in hell that spec should feel like that unless you got a lot on it or running something stupid. If you sell CPU / RAM you could make room for quad core and 4GB ram. Thus ovcourse you have x64 os.

I wouldn't bother going quad yet.

You would be far better selling the GTS and getting something faster.

Ram for sure, it is so cheap right now. Get rid of the PC 5300 as 6400 or better would allow you to overclock a lot easier, and with more success.

with £150 budget out the gts and get a gt,overclock your e6600 and you will be sound:)

To echo some comments already made, sluggish?! High standards! :p

I think RAM, and/or one of the new GT/GTS cards. Wait for the new cpus, unless you really need a Quad for some reason, I don't know what you use your pc for though :)

im going to buck the trend, if its feeling slow - have you considered a new shiney better performance hdd, if only for boot/app loading, eg 70gig raptor, or perhaps one of the new 1TB samsungs (3 platters, lightning fast)

thats the weakest point imho

You guys are right. It's not sluggish when I'm playing single games. The problem is, I play an MMO where I have 3-4 clients running, additionally with 10 other windows/programs in the background. It does get slow.

And I'm on XP, although I have considered upgrading to Vista the last week or so.

Given that then I'd say vista home premium x64 and 4gb of 800mhz or faster ram would work nicely for you

I'd go for some new RAM - PC6400 or PC8500 - and then overclock the CPU! :) Then either buy Vista or save the rest of the cash for a bigger upgrade when the new 45nm CPUs come along :D

the system specs are pretty good....a format and reinstall of windows may help a little. even though the hard drive could probably be replaced by a samsung 500gb which is pretty fast.

you could probably just knock the speed of your cpu upto 3.0ghz just on the reference heatsink with no need for extra voltage... so thats a free upgrade in itself

A quadcore might actually help with this situation so you can spread the load around a bit, particularly if your MMO is a single threaded cpu hog (I can think of one in particular). +1 on the RAM too.

First you need to overclock, pure and simple. Get it to 3.2ghz or so and you will notice a big boost. Add another 2GB RAM (XP will detect 3.4GB or so) and you will be set.
