What would you upgrade?

I'm going to have £500 to spend on my current rig (see sig).

Crucial specs right now are :

i5 4670k
Gigabyte Z87-OC Mobo
GTX670
8gb Ram
Asus VN247H 24" Widescreen

  • I already have a 128Gb SSD for OS, a 250gb SSD for games and a 3TB HDD for storage and media. So, no need to upgrade any of that.
  • I could sell the i5 and upgrade to i7 but would it be worth waiting for next gen?
  • I could sell i5 and z87-OC and upgrade to i7 on Devil's Canyon, but really the question is the same as before. Aren't Intel bringing out something with a real improvement soon?
  • The GPU looks like an obvious choice, although the Maxwell high end cards are due out, no?
  • The monitor. If I upgrade this, then what do I go for and do I need to upgrade the GPU at the same time?

Obviously anything upgraded will be sold so I can factor that into the budget. How hard will it be to sell the GTX670 with a waterblock on it?

What would you do?

Should you get a couple more hundred posts you'll have access to the MM, so you should be able to sell it on there

Right now, I think there's two options, other people may think of more;

- Keep it until September and see what the GTX 880 reveals in terms of price and performance
- Grab another dirt cheap GTX 670 and SLI for great performance (PSU dependent)

However with your watercooling (I assume you have WC due to your waterblock) I'd just stick it out until the 880 is revealed, then make a decision

Do you feel you don't get enough FPS in games or what? :)

I don't think upgrading to a new DC setup is worth it at all, probably not worth getting a used/new i7 4770k/4790k either

I do see a bit of screen tearing but it handles most games fine. I just want to upgrade while the funds are there, but if it makes more sense to wait then I will.

Thanks.

It's a good idea, they go for around £120 on the MM. However, what PSU do you have?

I have a Superflower 750w in it just now, and a Corsair 850w as a spare. Should be fine?

Do I need to buy the same brand card? I think I'll struggle to get one for less than £160 on the bay, and the MM is a wee bit out of my reach yet.

My current card was £220 brand new, so £160 isn't too bad but £120 is much better!

I'd whack the Corsair 850W in, should be perfect

Don't need to buy the same brand card at all, any card will be fine from the same GTX 670 family

If I were you, I'd wait until the 880 comes out firstly, unless you find a really cheap (~£90) GTX 670

I didn't know that I could use any 670! I've never ran more than one gpu before, as you can probably tell. I'll have a hunt.

How much of a performance boost would an additional 670 provide? Is there a single card set up you could compare to?

That would be a smart thing to do. Now go get 1000 posts to take advantage of the MM ;)

I think dual 670's are faster than 780Ti by quite a lot - there is the 2GB VRAM limit however! SLI 670's are quite common and well regarded if my memory serves me correctly

At 1080p it should be fine though. With decent scaling theyre at around mildly overclocked 780 ti level

Christ, how do I spin this thread out for another 210 posts!

Seriously, thanks guys. I'll hunt around and wait if the price isn't right. On a par with 780Ti sounds good to me!

Yea, I was just thinking about trying to pick up a block for it. I think I'd pop it in and gauge performance first, right enough.

The MM would no doubt have cards going that already have the block on, but there you go... rules are rules I suppose.

Just 200 posts away, just visit a few forums and it should take a few days :P.
