Whatever Happened to Flight Sims ?

Does anyone rememeber F-117A Stealth Bomber or Chuck Yeager's one?
Those were my favourites along with Strike Commander (Wing Commander but on Earth in a jet)

Addons being the key word there mate. I don't see any new flight simulators being released, addons are a totally different kettle of fish as they are developed by small group of enthusiasts who do it to cater for a niche market. They don't have to convince their bosses that their product will make a tidy profit.

Most software companies now would rather just make a game for the consoles that they know will sell by the bucket load even if it's not really that ground breaking. If they are going to develop for the PC then they're gonna make another FPS because thats what sells.

I've not got a link on hand mate, but I saw it on one of the Microsoft Aces Blogs, he was asked about a combat addon for FSX and he said that they were going to do a proper fully blown combat sim that would be much much more than addon.

Spent years flying Crimson Skies online in what was one of the best online gaming communities I have ever been involved with. There are still some diehards playing it on Gamespy despite it being the best part of 10 years old now !

The genre seems to have petered out altogether. Strange really when in Battlefield 2 online the jets are so popular it's hard to even get hold of one.

Hey Jag SsSsnake here howya doin,not been on crimson since Roach died but sometimes check combat zone to see whos still playing.

Playing IL2 sometimes now,good community with a couple of old CSkies guys in there.Must admit I miss Cskies and the community a lot

110 are pretty good for you as you get them in the first tier and we have nothing to counter your cannons. Have you ever tried to bring down a 110 with a Hurri? May as well open the canopy and throw gravel at you. :)

I play as allied too :)

I meant that the 110s get me kills in that they're easy enough to take down with a hawk 75. I just shoot out the engine or wing struts, they go down pretty easy with a well placed 3 second burst.

Are you talking about Sid Meiers game? F19 stealth fighter was the sequal to it I think. I loved F-19. Played it for years.

If flight sims were not still popular then those addons wouldn't be getting sold either.

As for no new sims being released off the top of my head there is the following in varying stages of development:

Black Shark
Storm of War : Battle of Britain
Korea sim based on the SoW engine.
Jet Thunder
Knights of the Sky
Fighter ops

I haven't flown CS for a while now but there are still a dozen or so flying on Gamespy.

If this thread was a year old that list would still be the same, in fact you could count on your one hand the flight sims that have been released over the last 5 years if you're not counting addons and expansions. Plus the people making those games are the same ones who have given us what we have currently.

Fighter OPS was born out of the lack of new flight sims on the market that I'm talking about right now and sadly that looks to be heading in the direction of vapourware.

I'm just thankful we have FSX, Lockon, IL2 and the modding and addon community in general as it would be pretty bleak otherwise.
 
I'd rather have a few quality titles rather than droves of unadulterated crap like most game genres any day.
 
What is sadly missing are:


a) A good helicopter sim - Commanche 4 seems to have been about the last. And the real thing got cancelled...


b) A good air-to-ground attack sim - the old A10-based one from about 1997 was a hoot, but never followed.

Comanche 4 a sim? Black Shark should fill the void when it gets released.

Yea, Air Attack! QUality game, much fun, nice and simple.

i played F22 Raptor 2 as well but not so fun.

i bought IL Sturmovic, but it was a step beyond me i could never take off;!/
