whats a bay trail processor?

Just looking at new Laptops for a school and have seen this "Intel® Pentium® Baytrail quad core mobile energy efficient processor" how do these comparer to
dual core i3's or i5's?

I dont want to be buying rubbish

Generally used for tablets and very light laptops.
They arent "rubbish" they are amazing for what they are and the amount of power they use. That said I wouldnt want to use one to do anything like photoshop, "proper" gaming or 3d design.
If you just want a pretty fast booting PC to use word and internet with then they are fine.
"i3's and i5's" vary massively especially in the mobile world but generally they would be under an i3.

They are basically the equivalent of a mid-range 2007 desktop PC performance wise but with the advantage of 4 cores which helps to make things a little smoother while being low power use/run cool, perfectly adequate but not amazing performance.

I'm using one right now in the 8" Windows tablet I'm on - handles general desktop use and HD video fine.

They shouldn't be advertised as a Pentium though - AFAIK these are not a Pentium line. (EDIT: ah in some desktop/laptops they are sold as a Pentium system).

I have a Asus transformer book running on a baytrail and I'm very impressed. Immense battery life and it runs MS Office just as well as my work desktop.

Yeah you basically get core 2 performance from the upper tier bay trails mhz for mhz, core for core but in a 2 watt package compared to ~65 watt for the core 2 desktop processors. I get a good 9 hours out of my tablet while running office, general internet use, streaming netflix, etc.

I meant more in package size, power consumption and the same sort of target users (Office/Browsing/light gaming and media).
