whats a better blend?

Double quoted for truth, a couple of quid extra will get you into Jamesons & Famous Grouse terratory, worth the extra as cheap drinking material but you'll need to spend a fair bit more to decide whether or not you like whisky.

Famous Grouse is a blend. Just avoid the blends unless you drink it to get drunk.

Blends have a (slightly undeserved) bad rep. If you want to go down the route of blended whiskies may I recommend Johnnie Walker (Red Label if you can get it, failing that the more common black label). I personally prefer it to a lot of malts.

It all tastes like terps and anyone who says different is doing it merely to look macho.
Maybe you need time to develop your palate, I don't particularly like whisky but the difference in single malts is very obvious, say for instance Talisker where you really can taste the salt and peat from the isle-of-skye to a speyside malt which is much cleaner.

Anything, I only drink whisky when places run out of Vodka :(

Same here, even then I usually only drink Smirnoff, which is probably not very good as a proper Vodka?

As someone who doesn't drink Whiskey at all, what's recommended these days? Oh and do you take mixers with it?

The ones mentioned as single malts are nice, but it all depends on what you like, do you like the peaty taste from the island malts? Or the smooth taste from the speyside area?

Also straight, no mixer, plenty of ice.

I must admit I've never drunk Whiskey at all other than when I was about 12 at a party or one or two Jack Daniels in my time (if that's even a proper Whiskey). I guess I'd probably prefer smooth Whiskeys that don't require mixers to enjoy properly.

I just need educating on "proper" drink. :)

It's a whiskey not a whisky.. it's a sour mash, not Scotch whisky :)

it's also a bit pants, I much prefer Jim Beam for that sort of drink (which is what I mostly drink)

Ok one of the nicer Speyside single malts which is widely available, is Dahlwhinnie, can be picked up for around 25-30 quid (asda), can I just say you probably will not like it so don't go out and buy it, its not like drinking beer its something you either like or hate theres no "growing into it".

Try drinking JD straight with ice for a similiar experience, as when I say smooth I don't mean milkshake.

Moe, do you like scotch at all?

I don't mind it, I just don't choose it.

I only drink whiskeys with coke, lemonade, or ginger ale, I don't drink expensive stuff... I just drink whiskey and coke where most people would drink beer, that's all. Mostly I drink Jim Beam (black if I can afford it, White otherwise) and Southern Comfort (I know it's not a whiskey!), and often drink my dad's Famous Grouse and sometimes buy my own when I'm skint.

I also drink this horrible rancid cheap crap called Bannoch Brae sometimes because it's £8.50 for 70cl...

I want some Maker's Mark though, I like the wax on the bottle top. :D

If you feel like spending, i *highly* recommened Cutty Sark 18yr. As far as smoothness goes, in my opinion (and my dad's and my friend's whove had it), smoother than blue label, ballantine 17 yr. (althose those are very good too!)

I'm not sure how much it costs, but Black Label is also an excellent choice! (it's the lowest in the Johnny Walker Range after Red Label) Red Label isn't too bad either, but I have my whiskey with ice and soda, so... :p

If you do feel like spending a decent amount, Gold label, ballantine 17yr, chivas regal 18yr are very nice :) If you want to spend an exorbitant amount, blue label, ballantine 21yr, cutty sark 25 yr (blue label being the most)

Black label, Chivas 12yr are slightly mroe economical.
Chivas regular, Cutty sark regular, red label are probably the cheepest you can get. I've had reb label now and then, not the others.
