The stock speakers in the integra are awful. They are low down in the doors and very very flat sounding. Its actually so bad that I just don't listen to music in the car ever.
Soooo, what would be a decent speaker setup? Price not as important as it actually just sounding decent, but I don't want to spend silly money. I don't need mega base, I just want nice clear sounding music that comes out as the artist intended, not like its playing out a trainstation PA system.

Speaker mounts are for 6" speakers I think. Would amp, component speakers and tweeters do the job or would a small sub be needed? If anyone is bored enough list a few options that have differing budgets. I may need a new headunit too as the stock one is pants and I don't even think it has RCA outs for component speakers.

Im getting some alpine type r speakers in the front (16.5) and a pair of 5x7s for the rear. Sounds much better in my mates teg and I totally agree the standard setup is rubbish, the rears even drown out the fronts - when I first got the car I wondered if the front speakers were even working :/ All this im gonna power off a phoenix gold 4 channel amp which should be adequate and not too heavy.

Edit - the type r speakers are about 80 quid and the 5x7s are about 100 for some lanzer neo's which ive got in my focus and really like. Not much bass at all from them but thats not really my thing. The type r's give reasonable bass but they need a mounting plate or the magnet hits the stock plastic basket.

Nah I dont think ill bother with tweeters as they are more expensive and the teg is never gonna sound great :p Also, you will have to fiddle with the wiring etc to get the tweeters in the stock position if your teg didnt come with them as standard ( mine didnt ). Also, rewiring the doors with decent cable ( a necessity with decent speakers ) is a very tricky job involving drilling the door edge so I thought id just stick with 2 ways in the bottom of the door. A mate has this setup and its perfectly adequate and a big step up from stock.

Set of components in the front and an amp should be enough 6" speakers can produce enough bass for most people especially when amped

You really need amped speakers in the back of a teg though as the fronts you have to use the stock wiring unless you want a major job rewiring them.

I find a subwoofer is necessary most of the time to achieve satisfactory bass when the car is moving, i.e once road noise etc is introduced to drown out the bass from the 6" speakers, so if you can spare the boot space for a small sub, only a 10" or so, then you're set :)

You'll probably also want a component set, with tweeters you can place on the dash or in the a-pillar, i.e to direct the (highly directional) high frequency sounds to your ears, not your feet :)

Been looking around but to be honest I don't know which speakers are good and which are pap.
So can someone spec:

Headunit (nothing amazing, just decent sound, MP3 cd and RCA outs for an amp)
Amp
Front Door speakers + tweeters
Crapper rears (would a stock set be ok, is it just for sound volume?)
Small sub if its really needed.

I'd rather do without a sub but if it would really help then spec one.

Cheers

For the door speakers you need ones with a mounting depth of about 55mm or less or the magnet will hit the door. Preferably even thinner than this though but unless you can get some for about 30mm (like 2 sets I know of) you will have to cut out the back of the oem speaker basket. This leads to problems with water flowing down the inside of the door ( a teg "feature" ) and splashing the speaker. Maybe some diy water proofing is a good plan to. So basically you have quite a limited range of decent options - I personally like the alpine type r's, i think they have them down at halfords if you want to get an idea of the sound. I think pioneer do a shallow fit speaker set but they are about 120 quid and not very bassy due to the smaller magnet.

Subwise you can get away without them, but they are nice to have, even when turned down low, so you actually get the basslines coming through.

I have an Infinity Basslink and it was pretty cheap. It's very compact and still packs a bit of a punch (headache-inducingly bassy) so I don't need any more. Ideal for a small car.

It was also easy to install since it is active, and has a bass level remote control to fix in the front of the car.

A few people on this forum have them too, so you can get more opinions.

The problem is the Integra (Especially the Type-R) has absolutely awfull acoustics due to the lack of sound deadening.

Lots of 'ICE' in a 'teg is gay anyway, strip it and listen to that VTEC scream ;)

Ghetto blaster in the rear seats :)

You could try sound deadining the front doors, but then that would take the whole point of a teg away.

While I agree the VTEC scream is awsome, I quite often find myself on a long motorway drive in which the screaming VTEC is replaced by a small 4 pot engine making a racket through a beancan exhaust.
For longer driver I'd just like the ability to actually listen to music, at the moment its so bad I just can't hear anything, it comes out as muffled crap!

As for the strip it, I was going to leave it stripped until I realised the back seats can be lifted with my pinkys and the combined weight of the entire interior amounts to little more than the difference between me having a salad for dinner or a burger :D

Will look into this more over lunch (which is now actually, woo). I don't want to spend a fortune since I get the impression no matter what I do, it won't sound great.

Get yourself a set of half-decent 6 or 6.5 inch components for the fronts, and a small amp to power them.

Rip out the rear speakers and throw them in the bin while you're at it, too! ;)

I've got a pair of Alpine 6.5" components in my Prelude and a small 8" JBL sub for some additional bass, and it sounds great :) It sounded great before I put the sub in, but I just wanted that little bit extra.

Think I'll go for amp + front speakers (do you have tweeters confused?) first and see how it performs before I add other stuff.

Yup - components = midbass + tweeters

The other speakers you're thinking of are coaxial, which has the two parts in the same place.

When your midbass are low down, having the tweeters up higher drags the soundstage back up to a better level :)

The JBL 75.4 amp is quite highly regarded - and being a 4 channel amp, it'll facilitate a sub should you want one at a later date :)

Random question, obviously you don't want the tweeters trying to play lower frequency tones. Where is the low pass/high pass filtering done for the respective speakers?

Most of the time with a set of components you'll get a passive crossover, a smallish box that has 1 pair of wires in, and 2 out - one pair goes to midbass, the other to the tweeters. :)

The output from the amp goes into this crossover :)

Found the amp you mentioned on car audio security. Could you be a deary and recomend me some speakers so I can order them :)
