I am completely replacing my setup and this means bye bye to my trusty geforce 6800 GT AGP graphics card. I will be going pci express and want a replacment card.

What would be a good replacment? not bothered if its ati or nvidia.

Totaly depends on how much your wanting to spend and if you want all out performance or something that will perform to the same level as the 6800.

Im gonna try and scrape toghether £200 and want a good pci express card. This will be going in my new system which will be a Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) / G.Skill 2GB DDR2 LA PC2-5300 (2x1GB) CAS4 Dual Channel Kit and the motherboard to be decided.

I want a graphics card that will be able to handle the likes of oblivion and newer games at 1280x1024 with aa and af. I'm happy with my Geforce 6800 GT at the mo, but its gotta go as its AGP.

I will be selling my x2 3800+ dual core cpu / Asrock dual sata2 mobo and Gskill 2 gig DDR to raise funds for the card. So that might give you a clue as to what I could afford.

Edit: Looks like the 7900GT is fave but does ATI do a better card for £200?

At that price the 2 cards to consider are the x1800xt and the 7900gt. Out of the two the x1800 will perform better in oblivion than the 7900. Either of the 2 cards will be great, and will perform about the same.
For an extra £50 though you could get an x1900xt :)

170 quid for the x1800xt is your best bet, the high failure rate of the 7900 series is not worth the hassle in my eyes.

7600gt is also faster than your 6800gt so that could be an option too since they cost £110 inc vat and delivery

You'd probably get 75 quid for your 6800GT - so you can add the extra for either the X1900XT or for a 7900GT and pocket the money to save for the next gen dx10 cards!

Remember the nvidia cards generally overclock better than ati's - and the cooling solutions seem more acceptable too. (But at the mo the X1800XT is cheaper and just about outperforms the 7900GT at stock...... just!)

I think the same as above! You may be better waiting for dx10 cards as they only seem around the corner. Sell your 6800 then buy a cheap but fairly capable second hand pci-e card like an x800 or similar. Then sell it later for about what you paid and upgrade to a next gen dx10 item! You'll hardly lose any money and will stay well ahead of the game! :)

If you shop around, the XFX 7900gt can be had for £180. The X1800XL is £150 although i've heard the fan can be a bit noisy. The X1900GT may be an option at £185 even though it runs a bit slower than the X1800XT in current games but may perform better in future games and is fairly quiet (Sapphire).

why bother downgrading to a x800 card for? its gonna be slower than his 6800gt and lacking in shader model 3.0. if that the case he may as well stick to what he has and not bother changing the card at all.

unless you made a typo and ment him to get x1800 based card like the gto.

just noticed your selling your selling an AGP card. the 6800gt agp is gonna fetch you more than 75 quid seeing as how expensive agp cards are these days. you should get around 100 quid for it.

Thats good news thanks mate. I have a lot of options there thanks to you guys, I'm leaning towards ATI now, as I had a couple of there cards in the past and I like them. I see the point in just getting a cheapy card and waiting for dx10 cards aswell though. Thanks for the feedback all...

Now does anyone want a Aopen Geforce 6800 GT AGP(fitted with Zalman V700-CU) £100?? :p

No problem!

Think you've made the best choice! I've got an x850xt and i'm waiting til the dx10 babies come out! No real point in wasting a chunk of money on something that'll lose a great deal of value instantly and be (a little) behind the times! An x850 like mine or an x800 would surfice as a cheap pci-e option for now and you'd hardly lose any value on it when you came to re-sell (especially if you bought the card second hand!)

Cyber-Mav's right too! the Agp scene is getting quite expensive as availability is limited. You'll get a good price for your card so spend some of it on your budget pci-e solution and save the rest for dx10! ;)

Also, Cyber-Mav i only intended to suggest the x800 as Jimbo would stand to lose the least money when he came to upgrade. I assumed he wouldn't be able to run his agp card in his new system so suggested a temporary pci-e solution. There didn't seem to be much point in him spending a lot of money on an expensive card that would probably end up being superseeded in a matter of months. This should tide him over til the next gen arrive.

thats cool, i got my 7600gt for £97.50p inc vat and delivery, very good card for the price. all it requires is some shopping around.

i think end of year but i am not too sure.
Will existing cards not be able to implement dx10?
if so it would be better to buy a hight end card now and not get a dx10 card until 6 month after release

I can get a brand new -

MSI ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-060-MS)

£252 I must say Im very tempted by this.

Can anyone tell me what this means though...

- Crossfire compatible - Master Edition ATI X1900 card required!!

Edit:

Oh its like an sli thing yeah?

I'd just get the best card you can afford and not bother waiting for dx10. The new dx10 cards are due out at the end of this year but it will be another 4-5 months till dx10 games really start hitting the shelves, by which time newer better dx10 cards will be out. Your talking nearly a year till dx10 is the norm by which time gfx cards will be a lot more advanced. Just get the best card you can and skip the first version of dx10 cards then when dx10 games start to come and be the norm, upgrade again then.
