What's a good way to test potential of my computer?

Ever since I got my new computer, I haven't done anything intensive that wasn't outdated version of 3dmark(assume outdated as I ignore the update), any game I've brought has been games types I like that were for older than windows 7..

Mean haven't had a proper chance to game, but other than a metro duex game(2 full games)or something I've seen in game shop that would test reading specs I haven't actually brought it or downloaded anything like it, crysis is not a good basis as it runs that too easy, I've been having more fun overclocking a 754 sempron 1.8ghz(got it to 2.25 on stock cooling) and a GeForce 310 to make crysis a bit playable..

Borderlands is not a real test either nor would mw2 if I bothered to download it on steam again, world of tanks and world of warships are easy too, only 1 core used mostly on warships(from a test, never played tanks for same testing).

This is my computer spec and while it's not the best or anything to get too excited about, it's better than what's I've built(minus psu and windows 8.1), so want to put it to a challenge..

For note you can go into afterburner settings go to skins and change back to the classic style

Some good synthetics

3D mark fire strike
Unigen heaven
Unigen valley
Cinebench (this is cpu only)
And just some newer games as while synthetics are repeatable and consistent they arent exactly "real world" but do provide a decent gauge of system capability.

Ps your system would really love you if you fed it a ssd

Ha you know I never thought about that as on the older version there were no other options and while on the subject, I reverted back to the older version and my card must be different because it only shows + ??mhz rather than on old computer that actually showed the base clocks, only way I knew I overclocked the gtx was by having TechPowerUp GPUZ opened to see the changes..

Anyways thanks for the list, I assume these are system test programs rather than games? I know gta would push my computer and say f1 15, but those games are too pricey for me atm.

Yes they are all free software packages. And a ssd because they make and hdd system hands down 60x nicer to use. Easy to turn your head the other way to a ssd when you haven't used one before. But as soon as you have one you will never look back.

It's not really about the interface - although they all say 6 Gbps typically no drive can get close to saturating that (few even the older 3 Gbps).

If you look at a typical 1 TB HDD's performance in HD Tach (download yourself to test your own drive) average read speeds are about 100 MB/s (less than 0.8 Gbps) and average random access times about 13-15 ms. That means every time it needs to find a file there's a delay of about 13-15 ms.

A good SSD on the other hand (and you can see a few for comparison on the link) has average read speeds about 300-500 MB/s (4 Gbps), so 3-5x faster. More importantly, the average access times are really really small, as low as 0.01 ms (for something like a Samsung 850 EVO).

In other words, in the time it takes to start reading one file on a HDD, a good SSD will be able to access a couple of thousand. The effect on usability is big.
 
Thanks for replies and I didn't know there were tests for specific boards unless asus is among the minority? So I will give that a try..

I did some high/ultra runs on the unigen heaven and valley, my gtx is overclocked as I thought it was running slow when I first started using the computer until I did that, so the scores I got were based round that, will upload the pictures soon to see if they good or not..

Will also try the other benches..

As for the ssd segment, I'm not put off by them, if I didn't buy a brand new 500gb wd other month from computer shop for a laptop thats now buggered, I would've had an ssd, but a 120gb, then again I'm now using the 500gb in a usb powered enclosure to act as my external and backup drive, so ssd wouldn't have been ideal for that I'd have thought..

but generally speaking it's either since doing windows updates or overclocking my 750(if that even makes a difference) but the boot up time is must quicker than when I first had the computer and the transfer/write speeds not too bad either, So I assume if I did get an ssd even a 60gb then for me the writing/transfer speeds with be the big notice rather than booting..
 
If you're enjoying trying to get things to run as fast as possible the bench programs suggested are probably the way to go, especially if you can't afford newer games. Note that you can pick up some very taxing games for very little these days on cd keys.

Re:SSD. One of these will transform your pc. The difference is phenomenal, even for an already smooth running pc. Boot times are a a couple of seconds, and the difference in games is immense. If you get the money, you won't regret it- I recommend getting a 256gb min though as 128 is a bit small.
 
I wouldn't even entertain going for a 60GB model, these are likely to be the older Sata2 versions. SSD prices have been dropping rapidly over the years, so you can easily pick up a good 256Gb model for under £100 now.
 
ha i dont know, my spelling/grammar get get away from me when i start typing :rolleyes:..

to be honest i wouldnt bother with a 60gb either, maybe a 30gb for a tiny computer like a nuc or something(like my idea for a htpc type for movies), but given 120gb ones can be had under £50 new i would just be stupid not to buy those..

okay then i think i will add one to my wish list if everything will be improved ;), are there likely to be any new versions by the time Christmas comes as thats what my list is for(just because i got other things going on in the mean time to treat myself :|)
